Microsoft confirms plans to retool Edge browser around Chromium

The end of the browser wars: Microsoft to switch toapp based on same technology as Google's Chrome

Chromium is the foundation of Google Chrome, though the open source project is distinct from the company-owned browser.

And for those wondering if today's announcement means non-Microsoft, Chromium-based browsers - including Google Chrome - may be coming to the Microsoft Store, the answer is maybe, but at least right now, it seems unlikely.

"We look forward to working with Microsoft and the web standards community to advance the open web, support user choice and deliver great browsing experiences".

Whether or not you buy into Microsoft's love of open source software will play a role in how optimistic you are (or are not) in its plans to "create better web compatibility" by embracing Chromium.

Compared to the endlessly mocked Internet Explorer, Edge is a totally serviceable, relatively sleek piece of software, but the fact is that web developers simply weren't going to go out of their way to ensure that their websites would run flawlessly on the platform when almost 70% of the planet uses Chrome.

This also means that many of Edge's existing features will have to be rebuilt for the new version, which Microsoft says it is committed to doing.

While technical details are still scarce at this point, it sounds like Microsoft plans to replace its EdgeHTML rendering engine (which was a fork of its MSHTML "Trident" rendering engine) with Chromium's Blink. But that hasn't stopped many Windows 10 users from installing Chrome, Firefox, or other alternative browsers so they won't have to use this era's Internet Explorer.

'Chrome has been a champion of the open web since inception and we welcome Microsoft to the community of Chromium contributors, ' it said.

Microsoft intends to contribute to upstream Chromium and over the next year will switch over to the Edge-on-Chromium for their desktop builds. Previously, new versions of Edge were only deployed with Windows updates, leading to serious fragmentation.

Microsoft is planning to create a new version of Edge by using Chromium combined with some components now in Edge, all in the name of providing greater browsing compatibility across the web.

While for now the all-new version of the tech giant Microsoft's Windows, which is named as Windows Lite still only appears in some areas of Windows code but it is already a constant presence, showing that soon it will arrive, apparently in a new device, such as Centaurus about which we talked here. Given how reluctant people can be to update their OS, it left users vulnerable to compatibility and security updates. Yet it's also an admission of defeat-just like the decision to invest more into mobile apps for iOS and Android devices signaled the end of its mobile ambitions. Chromium-based browser vendors also would have to commit to using Microsoft's Store updating mechanism in order to get their apps in the Store.

This is a massive shift for Edge and Windows 10, and one that's going to divide fans and developers for months to come.

Belfiore also suggested that the change represents less of a revolution and more of an evolution for Edge.

"Over the next year or so, we'll be making a technology change that happens 'under the hood" for Microsoft Edge, gradually over time, and developed in the open so those of you who are interested can follow along'. That's Microsoft's new motto when it comes to browsers. We'll know more in early 2019 when a preview build of the new Edge will be available for insider testing.
