Kevin Hart Responds to Critics over Deleting Old Anti-Gay Tweets

I've said where the rights and wrongs were.

"I swear man, our world is becoming beyond insane", begins Hart in his response.

Hours after Hart confirmed that he'd been tapped to host the 91st Academy Awards on Tuesday evening, a number of offensive remarks tweeted by Hart between 2009 and 2011 - many of which include anti-gay slurs and homophobic insults - began circulating online, and some of those offended by his tweets started the movement calling for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to rescind their hosting offer. I've addressed it. I've spoken on it.

He followed up that tweet with another: "I then explained to them that it's hard to know what angry things people are saying when you stay away from the places that angry people love".

As noted by Rolling Stone, Hart previously said during his 2010 "Seriously Funny" stand-up that "one of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay".

"Guys, I'm nearly 40 years old", he said in a video Thursday.

In a previous Instagram video also posted on Thursday night, Hart offered no clear apology for the tweets.

"I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscars....this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many wonderful talented artists", he wrote on Twitter Thursday night. Unlike the near-simultaneous news that Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh would be MCs for the Golden Globes though, a lot of people are incredibly not down with Hart's appointment, dredging up his many previous instances of homophobia. "I swear, our world is becoming beyond insane, and I'm not gonna let the craziness frustrate me or anger me, especially when I've worked hard to get to the mental space that I'm at now", he says. I am truly happy people. there is nothing that you can do to chance that. If you don't believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don't know what to tell you. 'Like I tweeted a few weeks ago, Hollywood still has a real problem with gay men. What hasn't happened is an apology - not even your typical statement of regret and an assurance of "that was me then, and I'm a different person now". Earlier in the day, he said that he is in a "great, mature place" now and asked people not to judge him by his past.

Representatives for the Academy, which organizes the Oscars, did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment on Hart's decision to step down.

It's not the first time an Oscars host has been forced to answer for anti-gay remarks. As for the backlash he said, "I get it..." "It would be great to say I had that moment".
