Iran missile tests may breach United Nations resolution, France and UK warn

Iran becomes world missile power despite sanctions: Defence Minister

The French Foreign Ministry issued a similar call, condemning the Iranian missile test as "provocative and destabilizing".

Tehran insists its missile program is purely defensive but has threatened to disrupt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if Washington tries to strangle its exports.

"As a conventional defensive capability, Iran's ballistic missile program is created to be exclusively capable of delivering conventional warheads and, as a result, none of Iran's ballistic missiles are created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons", it added.

UN Security Council resolution 2231 enshrined Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, in which Tehran curbed its disputed uranium-enrichment program in exchange for an end to global sanctions. The president withdrew the USA from the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran that lifted crippling economic sanctions in exchange for a freeze on Iran's atomic weapons program.

The Security Council has been divided since the resolution was adopted over whether the language on ballistic missile launches is permissive or mandatory.

Iran firmly rejects any arbitrary interpretation of the provisions of resolution 2231, according to which, Iran is called upon not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles "designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons".

Iran's related activities not only are, in no way, inconsistent with the resolution but also fall outside of its purview.

"Iran is among the world's top powers in building missiles, radars, armoured vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles", Hatami told official IRNA news agency, reports Xinhua. "This is outside the framework of [nuclear] negotiations and part of our national security, for which we will not ask any country's permission", Shekarchi said.

China, Iran and Russian Federation all deny the charges, which the US makes frequently.

"We are acting to preserve, protect, and advance an open, just, transparent and free world of sovereign states", Pompeo said, adding that China's ability to benefit from the current USA -led system of trade and other agreements was an example of "the poisoned fruit of American retreat".

The two European nations and permanent Security Council member states have, along with Germany, been effectively torn between the White House's assertive Iran policy and the efforts by the rest of Europe to expand trade relations with the Islamic Republic by keeping the JCPOA in force.

"Falahatpisheh said the meeting was centered on the importance of IRGC missile power, today's achievements and the future plans and Iran's role in the region".

Those US sanctions have targeted Iran's critical oil sector, as well as several major Iranian banks and other industries.

"It is a grave and escalating threat, and nations around the world, not just Europe, need to do everything they can to be targeting Iran's missile program", he said.

Senior U.S. officials confirmed early Monday that Iran has successfully test-fired multiple nuclear-capable missiles in violation of United Nations restrictions on such activity, drawing a fierce reaction from the Trump administration, which will pressure European leaders this week to take immediate action aimed at countering Iran's latest military moves. "I believe that we are making progress toward getting a proposal tabled in Brussels that would designate the individuals and the entities that are facilitating Iran's missile program". The deal was meant to ensure that Iran would not attempt to secretly develop nuclear weapons, an ambition that the country always denied having. He is also due to meet the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Brussels. "He reiterated America's resolve in confronting the totality of the Iranian regime's threats through maximum pressure", the State Department statement added. The US is bolstering its military presence in the region, which is already one of the most guarded in the world.
