Heisman 3: Tua Tagovailoa, Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins

Heisman Straw Poll: With final surge, Kyler Murray tops Tua...

Quarterback Will Grier put together one of the finest individual seasons in West Virginia football history, but ultimately it was not enough to earn a trip to New York City as one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

Joining Murray on the list of finalists who will be in NY for this weekend's Heisman Trophy festivities are Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Oklahoma's Heisman Trophy winners were running backs Billy Vessels in 1952, Steve Owens in 1969 and Billy Sims in 1978, and White in 2003, Bradford in 2008 and Mayfield a year ago. Oklahoma would become the fourth school, joining Yale, Army and Southern California, to have Heisman winners in consecutive seasons, but the first to have quarterbacks win it in back-to-back years. The junior Texas A&M transfer also held the advantage in The Athletic's poll. Tagovailoa has been the favorite for most of the season, but Murray may have passed on him championship weekend.

Sooners quarterback Murray is one of three players to eclipse 4,000 passing yards, accumulating a season total of 4,053 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His first season as a starter has been as good as advertised, with 3,353 yards passing, 37 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. He is expected to be ready for the playoff semifinal on December 29. Haskins also leapfrogged Grier as the nation's No. 2 passer after the Big Ten title game and added to his national lead with 47 touchdown passes.

The Heisman has been dominated by quarterbacks over the last two decades. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa had the worst game of his career during Alabama's SEC Championship win against Georgia.

Murray is the 10th Heisman finalist for Oklahoma, more than any other team in the country.
