Graham wants Senate resolution on Saudi prince

CIA Director to Brief Lawmakers on Saudi Journalist's Murder

'I think he's insane.

Republican senators briefed Tuesday by CIA Director Gina Haspel on the killing of Jamal Khashoggi immediately turned up the heat on Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, saying they are convinced more than ever that the prince was involved in the activist's death. "There's a smoking saw".

"MBS, the crown prince, is a wrecking ball".

"I can't even ask to be included in it because I didn't know it was going to happen, except for reading about it in the media", Sen.

CIA Director Gina Haspel has briefed Senate leaders on the slaying of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi as senators weigh punishing the longtime Middle East ally over the killing.

He also advocated suspending arms sales to Saudi Arabia until those responsible for Khashoggi's murder are held to account. "Now's the time to come down hard", he said. "I think he is risky, and he has put the relationship at risk".

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is driven to a meeting with Algerian Prime Minister upon the crown prince's arrival in Algiers, Algeria, on December 2. The royal has been accused of ordering the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi last month at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

The explosive new declarations by members of President Donald Trump's party run counter to the White House narrative downplaying possible links between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the October killing of journalist and palace critic Khashoggi at the kingdom's Istanbul consulate.

Haspel, today, met with a small group of senators, including leadership and the chairmen and top Democrats on the key national security committees, after senators in both parties complained that she didn't attend an all-Senate briefing with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis last week.

They said the "whole world is certain that he ordered a bad crime against the journalist Jamal Khashoggi". Trump said in a statement on November 20.

Khashoggi's killing has put mounting pressure on Riyadh and Prince Mohammed, who Turkish officials - and reportedly the Central Intelligence Agency - have concluded was behind the critic's death.

The Senate is gearing up for a potentially unwieldy debate over US policy regarding Yemen and Saudi Arabia, and a Tuesday briefing for key senators from the Central Intelligence Agency chief did nothing to thwart that.

Corker also suggested that the briefing last week, which featured Pompeo and Mattis but not Haspel, was entirely misleading. "They think that it's strategic to the administration's views".

"You have to be willfully blind not to come to the conclusion that this was orchestrated and organised by people under the command of MBS", Republican Senator Linsey Graham told reporters on Tuesday.

"Were there text messages sent back from the killers to the crown prince's office?"
