Emails of top Republicans stolen in major 2018 hack

US Capitol building

The sensitive emails of senior GOP officials suffered a "major hack" prior to the 2018 midterm elections; exposing countless messages to an "outside intruder".

"The email accounts of four senior aides at the National Republican Congressional Committee were surveilled for several months, the party officials said".

Politico reports that the NRCC paid "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to the Washington law firm Covington and Burling to respond to the hack, along with Mercury Public Affairs. "I think you can draw from that".

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which plays a key role in electing new members and holding onto red seats in the House, was a victim of a major cyber attack during the 2018-midterm election.

They also said they did not reveal the attack's existence because they were afraid it would alert the hacker that they knew of it and were looking for the person's identity.

During the 2016 presidential election, WikiLeaks' released hacked material damaging to Clinton's presidential effort, and U.S. intelligence agencies have said Russian Federation was the source of that hacked material. The cybersecurity of the Committee's data is paramount, and upon learning of the intrusion, the NRCC immediately launched an internal investigation and notified the FBI, which is now investigating the matter, ' Ian Prior, a vice president at Mercury, told Politico.

The NRCC would offer no additional comment in order to "protect the integrity of that investigation", the statement said. "They had bad defenses, and they were able to be hacked", Trump told CBS News. None of the emails accessed have been released to the public, nor were NRCC officials threatened by the perpetrators with such an action.

Virginia Senator Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said in a tweet that the NRCC hack demonstrates that such attacks are "not a Republican or Democratic problem".
