Crew from aborted Soyuz mission to get second chance at ISS mission

The Soyuz-FG rocket booster with Soyuz MS-11 space ship carrying a new crew to the International Space Station ISS blasts off at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome Kazakhstan Monday Dec. 3 2018. The Russian rocket carries U.S. astronaut Anne McC

"The Soyuz MS-11 spacecraft with a crew onboard successfully docked with the Research Module Poisk of the International Space Station", it said on Twitter. The Soyuz rocket carrying Russian, American and Canadian astronauts took off from Kazakhstan and reached orbit, in the first manned mission since a failed launch in October.

This trip is a first for McClain and Saint-Jacques, while Kononenko will feel at home - it's his fourth expedition to the ISS. In addition, Kononenko and Prokopiev 11 December will be released into outer space to explore the ship "Soyuz MS-09" where you previously found the hole. The spacecraft made four orbits over six hours as it chased down the space station for the docking. The three new crew of the orbiting outpost lifted off without a hitch on Monday, Dec. 3, from Kazakhstan.

The first failed mission raised concerns about Moscow's Soviet-designed spacecraft, however, Russia's Rocosmos space agency has confirmed that the previous aborted mission was caused by a faulty sensor.

The families of the crew, other astronauts and space officials from several nations breathed a sigh of relief after observing the flawless launch, with October's Soyuz rocket failure still on the minds of many.

The arrival briefly restores the station's crew complement to six as they join Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA, Expedition 57 Commander Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) and Sergey Prokopyev of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

The new mission will see the three latest crew members on the station for six months conducting hundreds of science investigations. Auñón-Chancellor, Gerst and Prokopyev are scheduled to remain aboard the station until December 20.

NASA had already assigned Koch to the Soyuz MS-12 spacecraft in May, a mission at the time scheduled for launch in April 2019.

The launch was closely scrutinised because of the abortive mission to the ISS on October 11, which ended two minutes after take-off when a rocket failure forced its two-man crew to perform an emergency landing.

Taking to micro-blogging website Twitter, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed that the crew were "safely in orbit" and thanked the United States and Russian teams "for their dedication to making this launch a success". That means they will be coordinating the launch of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule on January 7 and that of the Boeing Starliner in March.

The accident highlighted the "smart design of the Soyuz and the incredible work that the search and rescue people here on the ground are ready to do every launch", he said.
