Congress seeks 2-week extension to avert government shutdown

Lawmakers are considering taking up a one-week spending bill to avoid a partial government shutdown by Friday, a move created to put off a major showdown until after former President George H.W. Bush's funeral proceedings, according to a source briefed on the talks. "Either way, people will NOT be allowed into our Country illegally!"

House leaders canceled roll call votes this week for ceremonies honoring Bush, who died Friday, meaning an extension will be needed to avert a funding lapse.

A person familiar with the arrangements said the Bush team and Trump White House have been in close contact in planning an eventual funeral for the elder President Bush for months, marking a departure from what has been a long-running feud between President Trump and the Bush family. Trump now says he may extend that deadline by two weeks.

During the 2016 campaign, then-candidate Trump mocked former primary rival Jeb Bush as "low energy" and has also been fiercely critical of former President George W. Bush, even once describing him as the "worst" president in USA history. Some House Democrats prefer zero money be appropriated for the wall, and Hoyer suggested that the language can be drafted broadly enough to appease most of his caucus. Chuck Schumer of NY and Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, to the White House for a meeting Tuesday, officials said.

A group of border-state House Democrats sent Schumer a letter last week expressing opposition to any funding for the wall, which they said would separate local communities and antagonize Mexico.

"I'm hopeful we can do that", he said. Indeed, the wall hasn't been funded by the president's own party members who led Congress and the Senate for the past two years.

"The $1.6 billion ... the language is broader than just a wall, so I think that that could probably be agreed upon, which was a figure in the Senate bill", Hoyer said.

Congress has already passed full-year funding for most other federal agencies, meaning they would remain open.
