Chris Dawson arrested, expected to be charged with murder of Lynette Dawson

Chris Dawson

Chris Dawson, the husband of missing Sydney woman Lynette Dawson and subject of popular true crime podcast Teacher's Pet, has been arrested on Queensland's Gold Coast this morning.

'That information enabled New South Wales Police to get an arrest warrant for a 70-year-old man now living in Queensland, ' Fuller said.

The Teacher's Pet - the podcast made by journalists from The Australian newspaper - details a troubled marriage leading up to the disappearance and scrutinises the police response to it.

Lyn Dawson disappeared without a trace 36 years ago.

The former rugby league player allegedly moved his teenage lover into the family's Bayview home just days after Lyn went missing.

"They were predominantly statements from witnesses that helped us to tie pieces of the puzzle is together", he told reporters.

Mr Fuller said finding Ms Dawson's remains was "not crucial to finalising the matter", however investigators had not given up hope of doing so.

Ms Barnes argued that her client had a brother in NSW with whom he could live if bail was granted and said Mr Dawson was happy to check in at a local police station regularly.

Police have been criticised for not investigating the disappearance properly.

In September, police dug up the backyard at the Bayview home the couple had shared but did not find remains or items of interest.

Dawson is expected to be extradited from a Queensland court to NSW today, where he will be formally charged with his wife's murder.

However, prosecutors have previously said there was insufficient evidence to lay charges.

Dawson, a Newtown rugby league player in the early 1970s, has always been a suspect in the case but denies any involvement in his wife's disappearance.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella denied Mr Dawson's bail application, saying he was an unacceptable risk of failing to appear. She was 33 at the time.

'What is important to me was justice for Lynette Dawson and her family, and today is an important step forward in that, ' he added.

Meanwhile, Chris Dawson's family has released a statement proclaiming his innocence.

"We're certainly hoping an interview with this 70-year-old man who's now in custody in Queensland will assist us with the outcome of where the body may be".

"We are disappointed at the decision of the DPP as there is clear and uncontested evidence that Lyn Dawson was alive long after she left Chris and his daughters", brother Peter Dawson said, according to the Seven Network.

"We have to also ensure Chris gets due process".

Mr Dawson will face a NSW court later this week.
