BT to Remove Huawei Equipment From Its Core 4G Network

BT will strip Huawei kit from its core 4G network

Additionally, Huawei was excluded by BT from bidding on future contracts regarding 5G network infrastructure, hardware, and equipment.

Huawei-built phone masts and peripheral things like that can stay, but BT has a long-standing commitment in place to not use equipment from the supplier at the very core of its network, due to the unspecified potential security risks of handing an overseas company the keys to your whole network. BT Group, formerly British Telecom, has chose to not only strip Huawei of its core 4G network but also close the door on any future 5G plans.

"We're applying these same principles to our current RFP (request for proposal) for 5G core infrastructure".

Britain's telecoms have avoided using Huawei equipment in their network cores, which contain customers' personal data. As a result, Huawei has not been included in vendor selection for our 5G core. Huawei's "enhanced packet core" technology is still at the core of EE's 4G network today.

BT said Huawei's equipment had not been used in the core of its fixed-line network, and it was removing it from the core of the mobile networks it acquired when it bought operator EE.

BT Group's capital expenditure was £1.833 billion in H1 fiscal 2018-19 vs £1.693 billion in H1 2017-18 including network investment of £988 million.

It said it began working with EE in 2012, and had supplied the mobile operators with 3G and 4G network solutions, including core network equipment. The maximum capacity 4G sites in the UK's busiest hotspots lay the foundation for 5G network switch on in 2019, EE said.

Australia earlier this year, and New Zealand more recently, have rejected Huawei's bid to suply 5G network infrastructure hardware, stating national security as the main reason.

News of BT's shafting of Huawei comes just weeks after the Wall Street Journal reported that the USA government is pressuring foreign allies to ditch networking from Huawei.

The revelations follow security concerns which were ramped up by a recent report by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which alleged Huawei and other Chinese 5G equipment manufacturers could be vulnerable to state influence from Beijing.
