‘Bring home the bagels’? New PETA campaign goes after ‘anti-animal’ language

Some of the suggestions by PETA to'remove speciesism from daily conversations

PETA called for a change in anti-animal language.

The group suggested that some commonly-used turns of phrase are anti-animal and that they should be removed and replaced.

The last scenario is what is now playing out in the Twittersphere, as PETA took to its account to tweet about how we should remove "speciesist" language - language that is unfriendly to animals - from our vocabularies.

They are urging people, for example, to use phrases like "bringing home the bagels" instead of 'bringing home the bacon'.

But judging from responses, they may be feeding a fed horse. Instead of "bring home the bacon", try "bring home the bagels".

Despite PETA being mocked, Dr Shareena Hamzah, a language expert at the University of Swansea, believes these types of phrases may increase in popularity as we start to think more and more about the ethics surrounding consuming animal products.

They also say people should stop saying "kill two birds with one stone", and say "feed two birds with one scone" instead. Some twitter users even suggested other alternatives, like "Curiosity thrilled the cat".

The animal-rights group is pushing for "animal-friendly idioms" and provided a list of suggestions people can use to avoid offending vegans, PETA said.

In others words, the human species versus everyone else.
