3 killed in explosion in southern Iran’s port town of Chabahar

Chabahar in Iran's Sistan and Balochestan province is located near the border with Pakistan

A suicide auto bomber has attacked a police headquarters in the Iranian port city of Chabahar, killing at least three people and wounding several others, according to state TV.

Suicide bombings are rare in Iran, but Sunni militant groups have carried out several attacks on Iranian security forces in the Sistan-Baluchestan province in recent years.

"The terrorists exploded a auto carrying explosives at the gate of the [police] headquarters", Bameri was quoted as saying by the official government news agency IRNA. "Three people were killed and some others were injured", Chabahar's governor Rahmdel Bameria told state TV.

"Terrorists attacked the police post in Chabahar with an explosives-laden vehicle", he said.

State television reported shooting in the area shortly after the explosion.

India Thursday strongly condemned the "despicable" terrorist attack in the southeastern Iranian port city of Chabahar and said the perpetrators of the crime must be brought to justice expeditiously.

There was no immediate claim of responsiblity for the attack.

Chabahar city is around 100 km from Iran's border with Pakistan.

Mohammad Pakpur, the commander of the ground forces of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said the attack had failed. In September, gunmen dressed as soldiers attacked a military parade in Ahvaz, killing and injuring dozens.

Arab separatists and the Islamic State group both claimed responsibility for the attack. Another coordinated June 7, 2017 IS group assault on parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, killed at least 18 people and wounded more than 50.
