Zion Williamson takes flight from the moon on alley-oop dunk

Zion Williamson dunks against the Eastern Michigan Eagles. More

In the first two wins of the season, freshmen R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish have combined to score more than 70 percent of Duke's total points, and many have questioned whether the Blue Devils would be as dominant in off nights by the freshmen.

Williamson is the ideal example of why the National Basketball Association rule prohibiting high school players from entering the National Basketball Association.

In the ho-hum game where Duke (3-0) ran out to as large as a 37-point lead in the first half over Eastern Michigan (3-1), Williamson brought the spotlight to the game with his acrobatic moves around, and above the rim.

For the first time this season, and for the first time ever for the freshmen that heavily populate the Duke basketball roster, the No. 1 in the nation tag was worn by the team as it hosted Eastern Michigan on Wednesday. "We played at a pace that was different than the pace they are good at".

"They're so much more than just highlight plays and dunks", co-captain Jack White said. Two dribbles, a pass up court, a lob, and in a matter of seconds, the Blue Devils have scored and put momentum on their side.

Turnover after turnover plagued Eastern Michigan, turning into fast break points for Duke, which outscored the Eagles in the first half off dunks alone.

For his part, Williamson thought his night was highlighted by a toss to Barrett for another spectacular dunk.

You could feel that alley-oop through the TV screen.

"Everything we did kind of worked, and the reason it worked was because we played so hard", Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. Williamson poured in 21 points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes on the floor, but his gravity-defying dunk midway through the first half absolutely rocked Cameron Indoor and stole the show.

In the locker room after Wednesday night's game, he broke into a hearty laugh when teammate Joey Baker pulled out his cellphone to show a photo proving that Williamson did, in fact, soar to eye-level with the rim. Both of them have scored at least 20 points in all three games.

Krzyzewski was asked afterward if he has to pinch himself to believe what he's seeing from his star freshman. Reddish said that putting the Kentucky win in the past and moving on was "definitely tough" but that "we can't dwell on any win". It was the best game where we talked well.
