Zimbabwe's controversial Prophet Magaya retracts HIV cure claims

Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa

Prosecuting, Sebastian Mutizirwa said, "Circumstances are that on October 31 the accused made an advertisement on Yadah TV of Aguma medicine which he claimed to be a cure for HIV and AIDS, cancer and other ailments".

Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (P.H.D) is a Christian religious organisation founded in 2010 and led by Walter Magaya who is a self-proclaimed prophet.

The State alleges that just before the search, Magaya allegedly destroyed some of the exhibits by flushing them down his office toilets and burning some of the containers which were, however, recovered half burnt.

The World Health Organization in the wake of the claims by the prophet said there is "no cure" for HIV.

He was expected back in court on November 29.

"He further made claims on Aretha Medical website www.arethamedical.com and that Aretha medical and himself were manufacturers of the Aguma medicine or drug".

"As ZADHR, we give you notice to take remedial action within seven calendar days of this notice by withdrawing all products that purport, claim or infer that they cure HIV and Aids from the market forthwith and making a public statement that withdraws your initial claim to have found a cure for HIV".

This comes after the popular preacher told multitudes at his Waterfalls church on Sunday that he had found a cure for HIV/Aids and cancer but said patients will not be required to stop taking their anti-retroviral drugs.

"I can confirm that Magaya is assisting police with investigations in connection with enquiries the ZRP is now conducting", he said.

The World Health Organization has debunked claims by a Christian preacher in Zimbabwe that he has cure for HIV/AIDS.

As of the end of 2017, 87 per cent of Zimbabweans living with HIV were aware of their status, and 74 per cent of them were receiving treatment, UNAIDS report stated.

However, while speaking on the matter, Dr Alex Gasaira, WHO's representative in the country, explicitly stated that "there is no cure for HIV infection". "Health experts say there is no cure yet", he said.
