Your 2018 midterm election guide: What to watch for hour by hour

Rep. Barbara Comstock is vulnerable in her suburban DC district

The writer, being a woman political journalist from India, now transplanted to the United States, is in a unique position to observe the three aspects that are critical to defining this presidency: chauvinism, gunslinger politics, and immigration.

Americans have started voting in critical midterm elections that mark the first major voter test of Donald Trump's presidency, with control of Congress at stake. Along with these, a host of local posts are also up for elections in various states.

The midterm elections are shaping up as the ultimate grudge match of MAGA-backing supporters of President Trump and the #Resist movement aimed at stopping his every move. There are nearly two dozen House races to watch in this hour across more than a dozen states.

Donald Trump is an extraordinarily polarising person.

Rasmussen points out that just before the November 2014 election, which gave the GOP control of the Senate and an increased majority in the House, the GOP's lead in the Rasmussen Congressional poll was 43%-41%.

Should Democrats re-take the House, there are signs some in the conference may launch a push to impeach the president - though the leadership has not yet backed the effort.

"They woke up a lot of people".

These queries buy into the general suspicion against migrants that Trump is fanning with great exuberance. Is it people ticked off at the Kavanaugh hearings, ticked off at the caravan, ticked off at the left? It can be considered an invasion. And there are reports since that besides the USA army, several militia groups are headed to defend the border. "Get out and VOTE for Peter!", Trump wrote.

A crowd of people wait in line at a polling center in Utah.

"Trump has hijacked the election".

Democrats feel increasingly optimistic about their chances of taking back control of the House. Republicans now hold 51 against the Democrats' 49 (with two independents).

OpenSecrets reveals that Democrat spending was most dominant in 435 U.S. House of Representative contests where Democratic hopefuls raised over $951 million, versus just $637 million for Republican contenders. However, not so obvious is the fact that Democrats tend to speak louder about their voting habits than Republicans do, possibly putting Republicans even higher than the Rasmussen poll indicates. Thirty-five seats are in play in Tuesday's election.

Polls show Democrats have a strong chance of retaking the House on Tuesday, but they shouldn't open the champagne yet-even if they do win, it could take weeks to be confirmed, according to a New York Times analysis.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and other GOP leaders have also been blaming Social Security and Medicare as sources of the ballooning deficit, suggesting cuts and other reforms could be coming if they hold control.

But by May 2018, after the administration shifted its emphasis to Obama-Trump voter priorities such as immigration and trade, Trump's approval rose to 76%.

He noted that some GOP members who faced blowback from constituents on some key agenda items opted to "vote no but hope that the bill passes". Simultaneously, there are reports, like in Georgia, that restrictions are being put through various measures including cancellation of voting rights if different government IDs don't match, on voters who come from poorer regions.

In a last-minute controversy, NBC, Fox News and Facebook on Monday pulled an ad by Trump's campaign that critics have labelled racist. Trump declared in his typical style: "If she gets in, Georgia goes backwards".

With just a day to go for the polls, the caravan and the economy seem to have become the biggest issues for the nation, though there is some concern on healthcare for all, which the Democrats have been pushing as their main agenda. If Trump manages to pull off a victory in terms of retaining control of one or both Houses, it will be seen as a validation of his stand that poor migrants and refugees from other countries are a threat to the peaceful life of the American people and send out a clear message to the world on what the original "country of migrants" now thinks on that issue.
