With $50M debut, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' no poor boy

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

The movie made a huge $50 million on its opening weekend in the USA, and over $91 million overseas, bringing in a grand total of $141,703,510.

Bohemian Rhapsody, which stars Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, opened with a $50 million US debut, reports Box Office Mojo.

It'll be a high note to end on for 20th Century Fox, too, as they are now absorbed into new owner Disney; Bohemian Rhapsody marks their biggest domestic opening outside of Deadpool 2 in more than a year's time!

Bohemian Rhapsody was initially going to feature Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role, but he dropped out all the way back in 2013 reportedly due to creative differences with the surviving members of Queen. Mr. Robot star Rami Malek would eventually get the role.

Yet, a strong performance from Malek, which is producing some Oscar buzz, and the rocking soundtrack of Queen's greatest hits were enough of a draw.

Not too damn bad, considering it's much better than expected for the Rami Malek-starring film that follows the legendary British band.

The film's appeal is reminiscent of "Straight Outta Compton", a music based biopic film about the creation of the groundbreaking rap group N.W.A.

Quite apart from it making its production budget back nearly three times over - it cost just over $50 million to make - it puts it in line for some potential box office records.

The solid performance from "Bohemian Rhapsody" marked another unexpectedly big weekend for Hollywood.
