WHO Report Finds Large Gap In Global Antibiotic Use

WHO warns 'urgent action' is needed to tackle global misuse of antibiotics

In light of World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2018, WHO/Europe is uniting with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Regional Representation for Central Asia to encourage governments to embrace or reinforce their use of the One Health approach.

The "WHO Report on Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption" looked at antibiotic use in 65 countries and found the Netherlands used 9.78 defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 people, while Britain used twice as much and Turkey nearly twice as much again, at 38.18 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants.

Anti-microbial resistance occurs when bacteria are no longer affected by the antibiotics they were previously susceptible to or when micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses and some parasites stop the antimicrobials from working against them.

"... The "WHO Report on Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption" looked at antibiotic use in 65 countries and found the Netherlands used 9.78 defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 people, while Britain used twice as much, and Turkey nearly twice as much again, at 38.18 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants..." And as a result of infection with drug-resistant bacteria an estimated 700,000 people die each year worldwide.

"Access" category represents more than 50% of antibiotic consumption.

Hill insisted that the findings "confirm the need to take urgent action, such as enforcing prescription-only policies, to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics". NPS MedicineWise programs support health professionals and consumers to use antibiotics wisely, including the 5-year Reducing Antibiotic Resistance program, which ran from 2012-2017.

With very few new antibiotics having been developed in recent years, health agencies say their responsible use is absolutely critical to people's health.

US Antibiotic Awareness Week, directed by the CDC, is an annual observance to raise the awareness of antibiotic resistance risks and the importance for all sectors - human and animal health and the environment - to responsibly use antibiotics.

The discrepancies in consumption range from approximately 4 defined daily doses (DDD)/1,000 inhabitants per day to more than 64 DDD. In 2018 alone, the Pork Checkoff funded almost $400,000 across multiple research areas to evaluate antibiotic alternatives and other methods to minimise on-farm antibiotic use.

Painting the numerous health risks associated with the high antibiotics resistance rate in the country, Rev. Awitty pointed out that "it is now becoming hard to treat minor infections like tuberculosis even with the combination of four different drugs".

Bacteria can become resistant when patients use antibiotics they don't need or when they don't conclude their treatments. The unregulated sales of antibiotic contribute to the overuse and misuse of these medicines.

What can you do to help keep antibiotics working?

The five days of World Antibiotic Awareness Week features tailored multiday messaging that corresponds to each of the five strategic objectives of the GAP - awareness, global AMR surveillance, infection prevention and control, optimal antimicrobial use and investment and R&D.
