Who is the suspect in the Thousand Oaks shooting?

The officer who was killed in Thousand Oaks told his wife he loved her before running in to confront the gunman at the Borderline Bar and Grill Wednesday night.

Deputies are at Long's home, seeking to serve a search warrant, Dean said. Mental health specialists talked to him and didn't feel he qualified to be detained under the state's "5150" mental health detention law, Dean said.

He said that there are at least "six victims including one deputy" who are still inside the bar.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in the USA since 17 students and teachers were killed at a Parkland, Florida, high school nine months ago.

He was the head umpire for a local baseball league, a role that brought him into contact with many people, his father Jason Coffman said.

It was the second mass shooting in less than two weeks, after a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue on October 27.

He said he has no doubt Helus' tactics at the scene "were sound when he went in". "There is blood everywhere", Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters.

Here is what we know about those who were killed. Helus was a 29 veteran of the force who had planned to retire in the next year.

But when Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer entered the bar about 11:20 p.m., gunshots were already piercing the room.

The highway patrolman pulled Sgt Helus out, then waited as a Swat team and scores more officers arrived. The sheriff believes Dean took his own life.

The shooter was identified as former Marine Ian David Long, 28.

"Great bravery shown by police", Trump tweeted.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, said lawmakers would start crafting a gun-control bill when the House convenes with a Democratic majority in early January.

A sheriff's sergeant who was killed when a gunman opened fire inside a California bar is being honored as a hero. I want gun control and I hope to god nobody else sends me anymore prayers.

'I am so incredibly grateful for every moment we spent together. "There was an exit right next to me, so I went through that".

Borderline, a Western-themed establishment known to regularly host country, salsa and swing dancing nights, was hosting a college country night on Wednesday evening.

"His life was about going above and beyond", she said.

People comfort each other outside the scene of a shooting, November 8, 2018, in Thousand Oaks, California.

"I started hearing these big pops. Pop pop pop", he said.

"I remember when I was on the ground, seeing a girl getting trampled".

Long shot an unarmed security guard outside the bar before going inside, where he shot more security staff, CNN reported. The gunman was throwing smoke grenades all over the place.

Many more people had minor injuries, including some that came from their attempt to flee, Dean said. He said he thought their injuries were minor, and that majority were likely injured as they escaped, some by breaking windows. People dropped to the ground and hid under pool tables and bar stools.

In Jacksonville, the owner of Rain Dogs bar in Riverside's Five Points district said it's a sign of how hard it is to anticipate a shooter walking in and opening fire. Witnesses described a rapid sequence of shots that it made them think he was using a semi-automatic weapon.
