Victory aside, Pelosi's return as House speaker not a given

US President Donald Trump holds a news conference following midterm elections at White House

Donald Trump has remained confident in the Republican Senate majority, declaring an edge over the Democrats despite a massive House win. His loss was part of Tuesday's larger message: Many Democrats up and down the ballot, Evers among them, prevailed as pragmatic problem solvers opposing the GOP's ideologues - a formula described by former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as involving candidates "moderate in tone but progressive in thinking".

There's a lot to unpack from the midterm elections and why Republicans gained ground in the Senate, yet lost control of the House.

We know what happened after 1982 and 1962.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS - Eliot Engel, 71, wants to conduct oversight of Trump's foreign policy after what he has described as two years of congressional neglect. Voters then remembered the Depression and World War II and rewarded incumbents in time of peace and prosperity.

The midterm campaign showed the power of Trump and the #MeToo movement to motivate women, sparking an unprecedented number of female candidates and encouragement for women considering a 2020 run such as Senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar.

Deutch said gun control opponents would be wise to heed Tuesday's results.

Senate results support that point.

But Republicans are on course to increase their representation from 51 to 54 in the 100-seat Senate. Their majority, rising from 51-49 to 54-46 or 55-45, looks maintainable into the 2020s. Heidi Heitkamp. Additionally, Missouri Democratic Sen.

And then there is a lawsuit against Trump by almost 200 Democratic senators and representatives who accuse Trump of constantly violating the Constitution's emoluments provision banning the acceptance of gifts from foreign and domestic interests.

Similarly, one issue helping the surprise Republican gubernatorial victor in Florida, Ron DeSantis, is that he can appoint a conservative majority on the state Supreme Court.

Fight this battle in the court of public opinion. The Democrats can propose legislation too and with new members of Congress elected on progressive platforms, the party can advocate policies such as the expansion of Medicare, reform of the criminal justice system, and delivering secure employment, while also opposing the racial politics of Trump. There were a total of 35 seats in play.

This was a Whole Foods wave, with about two-thirds (by my count) of Democratic gains coming in upscale and suburban districts dominated by high-income college graduates.

Representative Bill Pascrell, of New Jersey, a more traditional pro-labor Democrat, is seeking to head the Ways and Means trade subcommittee, where he now serves as the ranking Democrat. The blue tide even swept away a GOP seat in Oklahoma City.

Other subgroups of what Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg dubbed "America ascendant" have not moved as sharply to the Democrats.

Neal has not publicly clashed with Trump, but as chairman would likely try to roll back some of the president's tax cuts.

Hispanics voted 69 to 29 percent Democratic, according to the CNN exit poll. Ted Cruz in Texas, 51 percent supported the Republican candidate for governor Ron DeSantis in Florida, and 76 percent voted for the Republican candidate for governor Brian Kemp in Georgia.

As important for the long term, the popular vote share for Democratic candidates was overwhelming - when all of slow-counting California's votes are tallied, the Democrats' margin will likely surpass the GOP's in their 1994, 2010 and 2014 waves.

Democrats won Gubernatorial and Senate races in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin-all won by Trump in 2016.

For example, Cummings and other Democratic lawmakers past year filed a federal lawsuit demanding disclosures of records to determine how Trump was approved by the General Services Administration to maintain the lease of the Trump International Hotel in Washington after he became president. "That of neither has been answered fully".

Losing the House will test Mr Trump's ability to compromise, something he has shown little interest in over the last two years with Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress.
