Brent Taylor, the 39-year-old North Ogden, Utah mayor who was shot to death Saturday by an Afghan commando he was training, urged Americans to vote in his final Facebook posts. He was on a yearlong leave of absence to deploy with the Utah National Guard.

Taylor was serving his fourth deployment in Afghanistan and was expected to return home in January. His remains are scheduled to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in DE on Monday evening. A GoFundMe page set up for his wife, Jennie, and their seven children has raised almost $294,000 since Sunday.

An Army carry team moves a transfer case containing the remains of Maj. The post became widely shared online and received more attention Tuesday as his widow talked about Brent Taylor's service in Afghanistan that coincided with recent parliamentary elections there. "I do believe that Major Taylor felt he was among friends, with people he was working with".

"Brent may have died on Afghan soil, but he died for the success of freedom and democracy in both of our countries", she said in a statement that referred to her husband's post.

"Brent was a hero, a patriot, a wonderful father, and a dear friend", U.S. Sen.

An Afghan military officer has written a moving open letter to the wife and seven children of a Utah mayor who was killed while serving in the country, describing him as "an inspiring man who loved you all".

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said in a statement he was "heartbroken at the news" and felt "completely humbled by the service and the ultimate sacrifice offered by this fearless and selfless soldier". "But the value of freedom is immeasurable to all who know and love America and all that she represents".

Taylor himself urged Americans to exercise "their precious right to vote" in his last post on Facebook, which drew a connection between democracy overseas and at home. And that whether the Republicans or the Democrats win, that we all remember that we have far more that unites us than divides us.

'"United we stand, divided we fall". "God Bless America", he wrote.

"It seems only fitting that Brent, who in death now represents so much greater than any of our own individual lives, has come home to US soil in a flag-draped casket on our Election Day", Jennie Taylor told reporters after Brent Taylor's flag-draped coffin arrived at Dover Air force Base in Delaware.

The attack that killed Taylor comes a little more than two weeks after US Army Brig.

Utah media outlets cited a statement from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation saying that Taylor was shot by one of the commandos being trained and that the attacker was killed by Afghan forces.

He was not only a guardsman and mayor, but Taylor was also cherished as a husband and father of seven. He held a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Utah, according to the North Ogden city website.
