US Midterm elections 2018: Democrats retake House, Republicans keep Senate

"Tomorrow will be a new day in America", Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a victory party in Washington. Democrats would need a swing of at least 23 votes to gain control of the House.

Democrats' performance in the House battlefield was mixed.

Suddenly about mid-evening, before the Rocky Mountain and West Coast polls even closed, the ABC News forecast gave the GOP a 94.7 percent chance of maintaining control of the Senate.

President Donald Trump and the White House is convinced that Democrats will usher in a series of investigations that could bring down the White House. Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion.

"We have already seen huge turnout, people out and about knocking on doors, making sure everybody gets out there, but I think turnout will be very, very high", Democratic candidate Katie Porter, who is running in Irvine, California, against two-term Republican incumbent Mimi Walters, told AFP.

"We didn't agonize, we organized", she said.

Despite the mixed result for the GOP, Trump called the election a "tremendous success" on Twitter.

Trump called Pelosi, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and several of the Republican winners.

Tuesday's result was a bitter outcome for Trump, a 72-year-old former reality TV star and businessman-turned-politician, after a campaign that became a referendum on his leadership.

Many Democratic candidates in tight races shied away from harsh criticism of Trump, focusing instead on bread-and-butter issues like maintaining health insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare healthcare programs for senior citizens.

Tuesday night's results mark a comeback for the Democratic Party, which last held control of the House in 2010, and will fundamentally shift the balance of power in Washington. The Senate, where only 35 seats are up for grabs, has a map that favors the Republicans.

Democrats needed to pick up two dozen seats to seize the House majority and two seats to control the Senate. The GOP only needs to defend nine seats and 26 Democrat seats are up for election.

Some of the campaign's biggest Democratic stars lost.

"If you look back through the last 50 or 60 years of USA history, if you are an incumbent President, the chances are you will be re-elected and there is a strong pattern of the United States two terms for one party, two terms for the other". In Virginia, Illinois and Florida, moderate Republicans lost.

In gubernatorial races, Republican Kris Kobach, a Trump ally, was beaten by a Democrat in Kansas.

The Democrats benefited from extraordinary voter enthusiasm, robust fundraising and unusually fresh candidates.

Of course, Democrats have been in this position before: Two years ago, polling indicated that Hillary Clinton was more likely become the next President of the United States, and she fell short in a night that shocked the country.

Although an incumbent president typically loses some of his party's seats in a midterm election, President Trump went out of his way to make the midterms a report card on his performance in office.

Republican control of the U.S. Senate is on the line tonight.

But Republicans performed strongly in the deep red states where Trump mounted a frenetic final campaign blitz and proved that despite his low approval rating he remains a potent political force among conservatives. Fueling their intensity has been Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric and policies, his efforts to dismantle health care protections enacted under President Barack Obama and the #MeToo movement's fury over sexual harassment. He was among 10 Senate Democrats fighting for survival in states Trump carried, including five by margins of at least 19 percentage points, though most were expected to run strongly.

In the Senate, where Republicans were heavily favored to keep control heading into Tuesday's voting, Republican Mike Braun captured incumbent Joe Donnelly's seat in IN and Republican Kevin Cramer beat incumbent Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota. And after two years in the darkness, Democrats have a means to fight back.
