Trump warns House Democrats against investigating his administration

Fox News calls House

"With the Democrats taking over the House we will now have to see what gridlock in Congress means for policy". He said Republicans "dramatically outperformed historical precedents". The Democrats made only slight inroads in Trump country, where they tried to win back white working-class voters.

Moreover, history showed that, with rare exceptions, the president's party suffers big setbacks in the first midterm elections of his tenure.

College-educated voters in the suburbs rejected his warnings of a migrant "invasion".

Blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stances.

Dems are on track to gain 11 House seats in these states including California, a state where the GOP didn't even have a Senate candidate on the statewide ballot this year.

"Tremendous success tonight. Thank you to all!"

Trump told a White House news conference that if Democrats start numerous new investigations, "We're going to do the same thing, and government comes to a halt".

"Tomorrow will be a new day in America", declared House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who would be in line to become the next House speaker. "She has earned this great honour!"

But the Democrats' edge is narrow.

A Democrat-controlled House was expected to pursue anti-corruption and voter-rights legislation, and hold multiple investigations on controversial aspects of the Trump administration, not least being allegations of collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russian Federation.

Governors - who head the executive branch in state governments - have been chosen in 36 out of 50 states.

Control of the committees - where the three lawmakers are now the highest-ranking Democrats - will hand them the unilateral power to issue subpoenas if they wish, as well as to demand documents and testimony from White House officials and important figures in Trump's campaign team and businesses. With control of the legislative apparatus in the House, they will also have more money and staff for investigations.

As for Utah Rep. Mia Love's loss Tuesday, Trump said: "Mia Love gave me no love, and she lost", adding, "Sorry about that, Mia".

But political analysts said the results fell short of the sweeping repudiation of President Trump wished for by Democrats, who secretly hoped for a tsunami that never materialized.

Nadler said Trump "may not like it, but he and his administration will be held accountable to our laws and to the American people". It wasn't clear what "leaks" he was referring to.

Fox News' Election Night coverage got pretty awkward on Tuesday, with anchor Chris Wallace completely shutting down host Laura Ingraham's analysis of the results.

The 2018 elections also exposed an extraordinary political realignment in an electorate defined by race, gender, and education that could shape US politics for years to come. Being white, a man, and not having a college degree all are factors correlated with being more Republican.

"Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans".

Democrats boasted record diversity on ballots. The House was also getting its first two Muslim women, MA elected its first black congresswoman, and Tennessee got its first female senator. And in in Texas, Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia have became the state's first two Latina congresswomen.

That would give the Senate the role of blocking House-passed Democratic initiatives on everything from health care to the potential repeal of tax cuts on the wealthy that the GOP enacted previous year.

Second, in the wake of their House victory, Democrats are likely to be more confrontational and subject Trump to more scrutiny.

Trump's team immediately sought to give him credit for retaining their narrow Senate majority, even as their foothold in the more competitive House battlefield appeared to be slipping. Democrats Claire McCaskill, Joe Donnelly and Heidi Heitkamp were all defeated in their Republican leaning states.

Nothing demonstrates the divisions better than the nature of the House and Senate races.

Drawing attention like few other midterm contests, the election has pitted competing visions of the country against each other, with race often being front and centre, punctuated by two racially tinged crimes.

Some hurt worse than others.

They can subpoena documents like President Trump's tax returns. 25 per cent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate.

Almost two-thirds said Trump was a reason for their vote.

His take-no-prisoners approach troubled many Republicans seeking to appeal to moderate voters in suburban House districts, but Trump prioritised base voters in the deep-red states that could determine the fate of the Senate. He served as vice chairman of Trump's now-defunct commission on voter fraud. So this was a five-point decline from what was already a low 2016 number. President Barack Obama's Democrats lost 63 seats in 2010. Democrats won seats stretching from suburban Washington, New York and Philadelphia to outside Miami, Chicago and Denver.

Trump's scorched-earth campaigning came to define the 2018 campaign.
