Trump warns House Democrats about gridlock over investigations

US Democrats win House, Republicans keep Senate

Democrats gained control of the Maine Legislature on Tuesday, growing their majority in the House of Representatives and recapturing a decisive majority in the Senate. Republicans are likely to expand their majority in the Senate, and Democrats lost some governorships that they badly wanted, especially in OH and Florida. Trump also held out an olive branch to Pelosi, 78, a former Speaker who is a front runner for the job, but who is opposed by more than 50 members of her own party who want a fresh face and younger blood to lead them.

That may be overly optimistic, especially with Republicans in control of the Senate. In addition to confirming two conservative Supreme Court justices, the Senate has confirmed an unprecedented number of conservative judges to the lower courts during Trump's term, potentially reshaping America's judicial system for decades.

When the new Congress is sworn in this January, Democrats will be able to curb Trump's legislative ambitions and, armed with subpoena power, flex their oversight muscles to initiate investigations into allegations of misconduct by the president and his administration. To get even with Trump, Mr. McCain had cast the vote that killed the Obamacare replacement that House Republicans finally, after years of dithering, had passed.

A woman holds a sign during a rally in Chicago to inspire voter turnout ahead of the November 6 midterm elections in the United States. President Barack Obama's Democrats lost 63 seats in 2010. Those Illinois victories contributed to the Democrats winning control of the House.

Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who is slated to steer the House Judiciary Committee warned that the election was about accountability for Trump.

Several ambitious Democrats easily won re-election, including presidential prospects Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY. John McCain, nominally a Republican, for contributing to the GOP's losing the House.

"The Democrats in the House will have to decide just how much presidential harassment they think is good strategy", the Kentucky Republican told reporters when asked about the likelihood of Democrats seeking to get Trump's tax returns.

By the time President Donald Trump and his team tucked into hamburgers and hot dogs at a White House election watch party on Tuesday night, he was ready for the bad news. If the special counsel, Robert S Mueller III, finds substantial evidence of illegal conduct during the 2016 election, he now will have a receptive wing of government to pursue his findings. After almost 18 months, Mueller has not brought any indictments related to collusion with Russian Federation, the central theme of his investigation. Holding the Senate gives Trump the opportunity to continue the historic pace of judicial nominations that have dominated the chamber's calendar in recent months.

In the Rustbelt/Midwest Democrats won Senate races in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wyoming by large margins; and also won governor's races in and Michigan and Minnesota by very large margins.

The press, the Democratic Party and most pundits regardless of party preference either predicted GOP defeat or said it was a distinct probability. "It's about restoring the Constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration".

President Trump also endorsed this impression, telling voters in a campaign rally that "your vote in 2018 is every bit as important as your vote in 2016", when they elected him.

"Now it is time for members of both parties to join together, put partisanship a side, and keep the American economic miracle going strong".
