Trump suggests Californians should rake forests to prevent deadly wildfires

President Donald Trump

Finnish president Sauli Niinistö told Yle that he believed Trump was referring to their encounter in Paris last weekend marking the WWI armistice centenary. "I was with the President of Finland and he said, 'We have a much different - we're a forest nation.' He called it a 'forest nation.' And they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don't have any problem".

The Finnish President told the newspaper that he meant to convey that although Finland is covered by forests, the nation has a good monitoring system which has helped to prevent catastrophic wildfires.

Donald Trump has once again raised eyebrows after suggesting the humble rake could solve the problem of California wildfires that have killed at least 76 people in recent days.

Trump has already drawn criticism for blaming the fires on mismanagement - his first tweet on the wildfires was an attempt to politicise the disaster with no mention of the victims.

"The fire was right over there and they were raking trees, little trees like this, nut trees, little bushes that you could see were totally dry, weeds".

But an expert said while Mr Trump may be right to talk about forest management, raking is not feasible.

Firefighters in Northern California have mixed thoughts on President Donald Trump's criticism of forest management but say their main focus is fighting the blaze. "And each year, managing that pine litter adjacent to our homes and buildings is super important".

California's problems are complicated, she said - a combination of hot, dry climates, poor community design and "100 years of fire suppression" that helped turn forests into tinder boxes.

The Fox host, Chris Wallace, asked whether climate change might not be a larger wildfire factor than unraked debris, but Trump didn't think so.

Our Choi Si-young tells us more.

The Finns and others have also been having fun at the expense of Trump's raking remarks using the hashtag #RakeNews and #RakeAmericaGreatAgain.
