Trump, Obama tout clashing visions of US as elections near

As midterms loom, Trump seems at peace with losing the House. Is that because it could help him in 2020?

He laid out the stakes on Monday in a call organised by his re-election campaign.

Trump and Obama are the most popular figures in their parties, and their appearances on the campaign trail are created to stoke enthusiasm among core supporters in the late stages of a midterm congressional election widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first two years in the White House.

In the final days, Trump has accelerated his harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration and lobbed apocalyptic attacks on Democrats.

In the House, Democrats need a net gain of 23 seats. "It's all fragile", he said on the call.

"Whether or not the deal is ratified or how quickly it's ratified, whether it has to be tweaked, will all be a negotiation between the 116th Congress - which could well be a different stripe than the president - and the Trump White House", Maryscott Greenwood, CEO of the Canadian American Business Council, told BNN Bloomberg in a recent television interview. "Trump has hijacked the election", one senior House Republican aide tells Politico. He covers US politics and current affairs.

"My guess is they would find things that would paint the President in a negative light".

In the Senate, on the other hand, Republicans have a very favorable landscape and are competing in conservative states held by Democrats. A list of AFR stations can be found here.

Donald Trump, his Republicans and their Democratic rivals steeled themselves for a final frenzied day of campaigning on Monday on the eve of contentious US midterm elections, when voters render their verdict on the President's first two years in office.

"They can do whatever they want, and I can do whatever I want", the president said, according to a pool report. Democrats have a lengthy list of their own priorities they would like to vote on such as lowering prescription drug costs. "The contrast in this election could not be more clear".

At the same time, he has sought to distance himself from any potential blame if Republicans lose control of the House.

Speaking about the prospect of a Democratic House takeover, Mr Trump said "it could happen", before adding "don't worry about it". The arguments about exactly what the election meant would be all over the place, and it would be tough to say anything with certainty, because we'd be entering a bona fide new political reality. "But, as you know, my primary focus has been on the Senate, and I think we're doing really well in the Senate".

He said he's felt an extraordinary level of enthusiasm for this election among his fellow students.

Trump, who frequently warns of voter fraud and has claimed without evidence that millions of fraudulent votes were cast in 2016, said on Twitter on Monday that law enforcement should be on the lookout for "illegal voting".

About one-third of the people expected to exercise their right to vote this year have already done so.

This outcome would be a massive victory for Donald Trump and the Republican party.

"If you do see a turn against Democrats in Midwestern states such as in and Missouri, I think it is fair to say that the Republicans who are winning in those places are probably going to be more critical of trade, whereas the Democrats in those states are going to be a more centrist wing of the Democratic party", Hurl explained. He received similar applause when promoting the economy, unemployment numbers and judicial appointments.

When Blackburn took the stage briefly, she told supporters, "If you want to vote no to Hillary Clinton and her cronies one more time, stand with me". Hoeppner didn't respond but thought to herself that her ancestors arrived legally. He has pushed forward with the rallies amid news events that would have halted previous leaders - holding a massive rally the same day a gunman massacred 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue. It is just as probable that Trump is campaigning so much for Senate candidates because he and the people around him recognize he is much better as a base motivator than a swing-voter victor. In Georgia he introduced former University of Georgia football Coach Vince Dooley to address the crowd of supporters. Country singer Lee Greenwood performed Trump favourite "God Bless the U.S.A." in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was expected to appear Monday with the president in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
