Trump knocks admiral who led Bin Laden raid

Osama Bin Laden Hunter Slams Trump Behavior As 'Greatest Threat To Our Democracy'

The Republican National Committee on Monday backed comments by President Trump that were critical of retired Navy Admiral William McRaven, best known for overseeing the Navy SEAL operation that resulted in the death of Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden.

The increasing tensions between the Washington and Islamabad follows a Fox News interview on Sunday, which saw the billionaire tycoon say "everybody in Pakistan" knew bin Laden was in their country and that no one said anything despite America providing $1.3bn (£1bn) of aid each year.

He added that he stood by his comments in a speech early past year at the University of Texas in Austin, noting Sunday that the "president's attack on the media is the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime".

"But living in Pakistan right next to the military academy, everybody in Pakistan knew [bin Laden] was there".

"Trump's tirade against Pak & his claim that that Pak does not do "a damn thing" for the U.S. shd be a lesson for those Pak ldrs who kept appeasing the USA esp after 9/11!" It later arrested Dr. Shakil Afridi, who had run a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad to help the Central Intelligence Agency confirm bin Laden's whereabouts. Trump's book, "The America We Deserve", came out more than 1 ½ years before al-Qaida's deadly attack on the USA on Sept 11, 2001, not just before.

"I did not back Hillary Clinton or anyone else", McRaven said in a statement to CNN.

President Trump tried to sidestep criticism from a former top military commander by insisting that retired Adm. William McRaven is simply a political player from the camp of his former opponent Hillary Clinton.

After becoming the US President, Trump has not visited these two countries -- considered to be a must for a president - where his troops are stationed.

Trump taking Wallace's bait and jabbing at McRaven is impressive in this sense: Of all the military personnel in the United States, there may be no single group that enjoys more goodwill from Americans of both parties than the unit that took out Bin Laden. "I pointed him out in my book just BEFORE the attack on the World Trade Center", he wrote.

Meanwhile, the U.S. president said he is planning to visit Afghanistan and Iraq to meet the American troops stationed there.

"Bin Laden being a prime example, Afghanistan being another". Robert O'Neill, a former Navy SEAL who claims to have fired the shots that killed bin Laden, was terse in his reply. "He escapes back under some rock, and a few news cycles later it's on to a new enemy and new crisis", he wrote in the book.

Throughout his 2016 campaign, Trump claimed to have predicted the attacks.

American attempts to isolate and contain Iran and China were also against Pakistan's interests, Ms Mazari said. When bin Laden's compound in Pakistan was finally searched, documents revealed he and other al-Qaida figures had been planning the September 11 attacks and others for years. That was a widespread concern at the time, as Trump suggested in stating "no sensible analyst rejects this possibility".
