Total recall: Florida faces prospect of vote recounts after USA midterm elections

Governors' races in the southern US states of Florida and Georgia had yet to be decided

Florida's Senate race was thrown into chaos on Thursday night when Scott, without providing evidence, accused "unethical liberals" of attempting to "steal this election".

They are seeking an emergency hearing as the votes must be certified by noon Saturday.

In Arizona, another tight senate race has yet to conclude - and the state's Republican party is now suing over how some counties handle mail-in ballots, U.S. media report.

The majority of uncounted votes are in Palm Beach and Broward County, which are traditionally democratic strongholds.

Unofficial results show Gillum trailing Ron DeSantis, a Trump-endorsed Republican, by just 36,165 votes, or 0.44 percentage points.

"Well, it could be", Trump said when asked if the federal government could get involved, "because if you look at Broward, and Palm Beach to a lesser extent, if you look at Broward County, they have had a disgusting history". Nelson has not yet conceded to Scott, who now leads by less than 0.2 percent with ballots across the state still uncounted.

"At the end of the day, when all eligible voters have their votes counted and counted accurately, the fundamental truth that we're going to learn is that more voters voted for Sen".

Regarding the Senate race between incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson and Republican Rick Scott, Trump alluded to the massive difference in the vote count that occurred between Tuesday night and Thursday evening.

"With today's filing, their desperation has driven them to ask the federal courts to allow voter fraud", Scott campaign manager Jackie Schutz Zeckman said.

"The good news is that since the 2000 election, the process has improved both in terms of how people vote in Florida and the designation of a recount", he said.

Scott said he was ordering an official investigation into his own race.

Elias said it's "not appropriate" for a governor to suggest he's going to use his powers to "interject his law enforcement authority to prevent the counting of ballots that have been legally cast".

Nelson is suing the Florida Secretary of State and demanding the state count every mail-in and provisional ballot deemed to have a so-called "signature mismatch".

"This information Supervisor of Elections should have already compiled and saved", one of his Scott's lawyers said to CBS Miami, "It should take 10 minutes to do". The Associated Press has not called the race, and votes have continued to be counted this week.

On Twitter, US President Donald Trump also weighed in on the race, as he did often during the campaign.

Various political figures beyond Scott have leveled charges against Snipes for her alleged actions.

All the complaining Trump, Scott and other Republicans are doing about ballots still being counted in heavily Democratic South Florida counties is either based on ignorance of the process or a deliberate effort to mislead the public, Elias added.

"I think it is fair to say right now that the results of the 2018 Senate election are unknown, and you and the election officials should treat it as such", Elias said. Kemp leads Abrams with 50.3% of the vote and has claimed victory, but Abrams, who would be the first female black governor in the United States, has yet to concede, saying that some votes have not yet been counted.

Gillum's campaign said it's monitoring the situation with an elections lawyer and readying for a possible state-mandated recount.
