Three bodies found in ruins after buildings collapse in Marseille

Two buildings collapsed

A spokesman for the Marseille Firefighters told The Associated Press on Tuesday that a man's body was recovered, in addition to the bodies of another man and a woman they found earlier.

Rescuers worked throughout the night searching the rubble of the dilapidated buildings which collapsed suddenly on Monday morning in Noailles, a working-class district in the heart of the Mediterranean port city.

Several people are still missing after a nearby high-rise buildings collapsed on Monday.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said "air pockets" under the debris meant there's "hope to locate and find someone that can be saved".

The body of a fifth victim has been found in the rubble of two dilapidated buildings that collapsed this week in the French city of Marseille, the fire brigade said on Wednesday (Nov 7).

One of the buildings, 63 rue d'Aubagne, was condemned, but local officials could not rule out that squatters might have been living there. She told AFP that she had stayed with her parents the night before the collapse because numerous doors in the building would not close.

"People died for nothing, even though we knew".

A local resident, Toufik Ben Rhouma, blamed Marseille city hall for the disaster.

Only one of the buildings, number 65, was occupied. He added that the figures had changed little since making Marseille the European city with "the most decaying housing".

A young waiter watched the scene with tears in his eyes, anxious for news of an Italian woman who lived in the building.

"She was a great girl, she used to come and study at the bar", he said, without giving his name.

"I haven't had any news", he said, wandering among the rescuers. However, according to neighbors, it is at the time of the tragedy could be people, particularly the homeless.

Recall that on 5 November it became known that two houses collapsed in Marseille.

The buildings were in a small shopping street in the centre of the city. A 2015 report by the government found that 100,000 residents of Marseille "were living in housing that was risky to their health or security", according to AFP.
