This is the ‘world's first’ smartphone with two notches

The double-notched phone you've all been waiting for is here

Apple wasn't the first smartphone maker to cut a notch out of its display, of course, but it was the first to use the notch design seen on the iPhone X. And of course that's the design every Android phone company made a decision to copy, for obvious reasons - if Apple does something, they have to do it too.

The Aquos R2 Compact is not a large phone like Galaxy Note 9 or iPhone XR. It has a unique appeal since its display with dual notches. Sharp, however, doesn't seem to think just one notch is enough: the Japanese firm's Aquos R2 Compact has two of them.

The Aquos R2 Compact will go on sale via Softbank in Japan in mid-January, and the company is also considering releasing a SIM-free version of the phone. The new R2 features a "double notched display" (yes, as if a single notch isn't already odd enough) in the front that comprises - a camera notch on the top and the other awkward notch at the bottom of the display (which certainly looks ugly) beholds a fingerprint sensor. With the Aquos R2 Compact, symmetry is broken on both ends of the display. The three color variants of the smartphone are Smoky Green, Deep White and Pure Black. The size doesn't stop the display from having an impressive 2280x1080 resolution and offers not only 120 Hz touch-sampling, but a 120 Hz refresh rate as well (Sharp is likely the provider for the Razer Phone 2 displays that have the same refresh rate). The display of the smartphone is shielded by a layer of Gorilla Glass 3. At the bottom, meanwhile, there's a second gap into which the combination fingerprint sensor and home button is positioned. Internal storage is at 64GB with microSD slot support for further expansion of up to 512GB.

You'll find a video embedded below so you can really take in the R2 compact's full splendor. The selfie camera is equipped with features like face beauty, bokeh effect, customizable backgrounds, and screen flash.

For capturing selfies, the phone is equipped with an f/2.2 aperture 8-megapixel front camera. Sharp's Aquos R2 compact is expected to be released sometime next year, but it'll never make its way to United States shores. The smartphone packs a 2,500mAh battery, and connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, GPS, GLONASS, Bluetooth v5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and USB Type-C port.
