Supermarkets including Asda and Tesco cue petrol prices

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco cut their prices after fuel retailers were accused of not passing on savings from lower wholesale costs.

Supermarket giants Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's are locked in a pricing war after all three pledged to cut the price of fuel by 2p.

The supermarket's senior fuel buyer, Dave Tyrer, said: 'Our new national price cap of 122.7p per litre will be welcomed by the millions of drivers across the UK.

This is the second reduction in less than two weeks after it recently reduced its cap by 3p per litre.

David Pegg, fuel buying manager. "We hope that lowering fuel prices will help customers' budgets, and their cars, go further".

Asda said the 2p price cut would now mean customers would never pay more than 122.7p per litre for petrol and 134.7 for diesel.

While paying 2p per litre less at the pumps is good news for motorists, according to figures from the RAC Foundation, wholesale costs have fallen by over 6p per litre in the last month alone, from 101.21p per litre on October 5 to 95.11p per litre on November 5.

The lower wholesale price of petrol has been brought about by an 11% fall in the price of oil during October.

Four supermarkets have announced petrol price cuts of up to 2p per litre.

This means the average cost of filling a 55-litre family auto with petrol has stayed at £71.83 when it would have been almost £2 cheaper if retailers had reflected the lower wholesale prices on forecourts, according to the research. "This is vital to the United Kingdom average price as supermarkets are so influential in fuel retailing they need to drop their prices for others to follow around the country". "There is also better news on the horizon for diesel drivers".
