Stephen Hawking's thesis and wheelchair sell for $1 million

Belongings of Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein were auctioned by Christie's on Thursday.

Apart from Hawking, one of Newton's manuscripts sold for around $130,000, a set of seven awards, including Einstein's award for achievement in natural sciences sold for about $387,000, a letter written by Darwin sold for $65,230, and one of Einstein's manuscripts gathered $42,399.

In 1963, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a type of motor neuron disease that causes nerve cells controlling muscles to waste away. The wheelchair was expected to go for £10-15,000.

In addition to chairs were sold dissertation Hawking in 1965, "properties of expanding Universes".

A range of personal belongings of British physicist, Stephen Hawking, including his famous motorised red leather wheel chair and a copy of his dissertation thesis have been sold for $1 million in an auction.

When Cambridge finally made Hawking's thesis available to download in 2017, it was viewed more than 60,000 times in 24 hours and public interest completely crashed the university's server.

A copy of his bestselling A Brief History of Time, signed with a thumbprint, sold for £68,750, a bomber jacket went for £40,000 and the script for one of his appearances on The Simpsons sold for £6,250.

In total, the auction included 52 lots and raised around $2.35 million.

The Simpsons script, meanwhile, was sold for around $8,100. Proceeds will go to the Stephen Hawking Foundation, which facilitates research into cosmology and astrophysics, as well as the Motor Neurone Disease Association, supporting research and campaigning for those living with the disease.

The items are only a small selection from Hawking's archive, which his family is donating to the nation in lieu of paying inheritance tax, although there are no details yet of where it will be stored.
