SpaceX launched the Falcon 9 with the Qatari satellite

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launches from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on Thursday Nov. 15 2018. SpaceX

Built by Mitsubishi Electric Company, based on their DS 2000 satellite bus, Es'hail-2 has a proven, modular platform with high power capability and flexibility for a broad range of applications. The Falcon 9 used for this mission was previously used earlier this year to launch the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite, making the entire event all the more notable. SpaceX may have four additional flights before the end of December.

After a final lightning-quick round of computer checks, the slender 229-foot-tall rocket was released from the pad, quickly climbing away under a partly cloudy sky.

Two minutes and 35 seconds after liftoff, the first stage separated and dropped away, followed a few seconds later by ignition of the second stage's single engine. The satellite will use its own power to achieve a geostationary orbit. If all goes well, the Es'hail 2 will enter service at the end of January. "Launching rockets in to space is an inherently risky business, but working with the extremely competent people at SpaceX, we are optimistic about the chances of a successful launch".

In what is now routine for the company led by CEO Elon Musk, the Falcon 9 first-stage booster returned to Earth about eight minutes after launch, landing on a drone ship called Of Course I Still Love You in the Atlantic Ocean.

The first stage landing, meanwhile, followed SpaceX's normal script for recoveries. The company already has recovered rocket boosters several times, both on land and on drone ships at sea.

SpaceX is set to launch its 18th mission this year at 3:46 p.m. today from Kennedy Space Center's launchpad 39A, the iconic site used by NASA's historic Apollo missions that sent humans to the moon. Since May, all launches by SpaceX and United Launch Alliance have taken place late at night or predawn hours.
