SF Doctor Fires Back at NRA's Cheap Shot on Twitter

Doctors Shares Stories of Gun Violence Aftermath on Twitter After the National Rifle Association (NRA) posted a mocking tweet to physicians about gun violence-just hours before a man opened fire in a California bar killing 12 people-doctors responded in kind on Twitter. "How are we suppose to solve this problem?" Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves. https://t.co/oCR3uiLtS7 - NRA (@NRA) November 7, 2018 A neurosurgeon in IN shared a photo of a bloody bullet she had removed from the brain of a 6-month-old.

The NRA tweet was spurred by a position paper from the American College of Physicians posted on October 30 by the Annals of Internal Medicine and titled "Reducing Firearm Injuries and Deaths in the United States".

"Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane", the NRA said. It lays out the reasons why this is our lane.

"After treating countless patients with life altering spinal cord injuries and brain injuries secondary to gun shot wounds, I would have to say this is my lane", @DanaBussing wrote. Whether or not the shooter should have the gun is not really our concern: that is what the law profession is for. Surprisingly little blood, but plenty of blood curdling screams from this middle schoolers mother when we told her that her baby was dead. Often, we know our attempts are in vain, but we try anyway.

One surgeon shared a photo of the chair she sits in when she tells parents that their children have died. The mental anguish of the families never goes away, and we are the ones who treat them when it gets too much.

For the ones that survive their bullet holes, they don't magically become a healed person again.

If medical organizations "would like to concentrate on a public health crisis", she wrote, "they should focus on the mental health crisis that results in almost 50,000 suicides per year, the medical community's complicity in the opioid crisis that takes over 42,000 lives per year or the 250,000 deaths due to medical errors". Again, doctors are the ones who are called to take responsibility to ease this suffering. Even if no physical scars remain, the emotional ones can be quite debilitating. 'Firearm violence continues to be a public health crisis in the United States that requires the nation's immediate attention, ' members of the American College of Physicians wrote, adding that restrictions should be lifted on gun-violence research conducted by the CDC and other government agencies.

It came after the NRA complained about doctors getting involved in the gun rights discussion. But, we never neglect our duty when the gun goes off, no matter the victim or the shooter. Medical professionals are clearly in the right lane when we speak out about the atrocities we see caused by guns. "Our research efforts have been curtailed by your lobbying efforts to Congress. We extend our invitation for you to collaborate with us to find workable, effective strategies to diminish the death toll from suicide, homicide, domestic violence, and unintentional shootings for the thousands of Americans who will one day find themselves on the wrong side of a barrel of a gun".
