Russian jet intercepts US Navy spy plane over Black Sea

A US military aircraft was put at risk during flight operations over the Black Sea when a Russian fighter jet made two unsafe passes, Navy officials said in a statement, Stars and Stripes reported on Monday.

During the 25-minute intercept, the Navy said the Russian SU-27 sped directly past the front of the aircraft.

The U.S. Navy has released video of what it says was an unsafe interception of a Navy plane by a Russian jet on Monday.

He says it was deemed an unsafe encounter that put the USA pilots and crew at risk. "The duration of the intercept was approximately 25 minutes".

The Navy EP-3 was operating out of Souda Bay, Greece, according to Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon.

The Su-27 then "accompanied it, preventing violations of the border of the airspace of the Russian Federation in compliance with all necessary security measures", the statement added.

"Jet wash" from the Russian engines posed a danger to aircraft flying nearby as the pilot charged up his afterburners.

"There's just absolutely no reason for this type of behavior", said Pahon, who noted that the American aircraft was flying a routine mission in global airspace "and the Russian aircraft kind of came out of nowhere and did not one, but two passes close to our aircraft". The Russian jet flew past it a second time, applying its afterburner while conducting a banking turn away.

The Navy released a short video clip Monday of the Russian jet's afterburner flaring alongside the US aircraft.

According to the Russian defense ministry, the fighter jet returned to its home base after the USA plane altered its flight course away from Russian airspace.

The US Navy also noted that the jet's actions caused turbulence and vibrations for the spy plane's crew.

"The smallest lapse of focus or error in airmanship by the intercepting aircrew can have disastrous consequences", Navy Capt. Bill Ellis, commander of Task Force 67, said at the time in a statement.
