Russian Federation says US senators meddling in election of next Interpol head

Skripal Hague!’ Browder full of ideas about why Russia suspects him of ordering Magnitsky’s death

"Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call: ".

Alexander Prokopchuk, a general in the Russian Interior Ministry who is now a vice-president of Interpol, is the front-runner to become its next president.

Russian authorities have leveled new accusations at British-based financier Bill Browder, saying the vocal Kremlin critic is now suspected of involvement in the death of his associate Sergei Magnitsky in a Moscow jail a decade ago.

Interpol's general assembly is due to elect a new head at a meeting in Dubai on Wednesday.

One group of United States senators said electing him would be "akin to putting a fox in charge of the henhouse", while a prominent Kremlin critic said it would be like "putting the mafia in charge".

"Russia routinely abuses Interpol for the objective of settling scores and harassing political opponents, dissidents and journalists", they wrote.

Delegates from Interpol member countries will elect a new president to replace Meng Hongwei, who went missing in his native China in September.

Former US ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul said the candidacy was "worrying for anyone who believes in the rule of law".

The Kremlin dismissed the U.S. senators' letter as a "vivid example" of an attempt to interfere in the vote. Having a Russian lead the agency could intensify such efforts to silence dissent, they said.

Analysts point out the position of president is largely honorary, with much greater influence in the hands of the secretary general, now Germany's Jurgen Stock.

Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who claimed Russian officials had stolen 5 billion rubles ($73.4 billion) in 2008, worked for Browder's company.

Atmonyev also said Browder was also charged with organizing a transnational criminal group and will be added to an global wanted list, while any property he has in Russian Federation will be impounded.

Browder fought for and in 2012 secured USA sanctions against Russian officials believed to be involved in the death of his tax consultant, Sergei Magnitsky.

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a case on the murder of accomplices of Browder - Valery Kurochkin, Oktay Gasanov and Sergei Korobeinikov - according to Mikhail Aleksandrov, an official with the office of the Russian prosecutor general.

Magnitsky was prosecuted and convicted posthumously, a development that caused outrage overseas, and a Moscow court sentenced Browder in absentia to nine years in prison in December 2017 after convicting him of large-scale tax evasion.
