Rebel Wilson apologises for plus-size comments

Rebel Wilson

"In an interview on the Ellen show, she said: "I am proud to be the first-ever plus size girl to be the star of a romantic comedy", Wilson told DeGeneres, also mentioning that the film is her debut as a producer".

Rebel made the comments last week, and when people pointed out that the likes of Mo'Nique and Queen Latifah had led romcoms before she initially questioned whether they counted as plus-sized.

But after remaining silent on the blocking issue, the Pitch Perfect star tweeted a lengthy apology.

She continued: "To be part of a problem I was hoping I was helping makes it that much more embarrassing & hard to acknowledge". She explained that she blocked people on Twitter because she was "hurting from the criticism".

Wilson is probably sitting down somewhere looking at herself thinking damn all I had to really do is just say sorry, and I was wrong.

After a long few days of silence and blocking people on Twitter, Wilson seems to have learned her lesson about what happens when plus-size women fail to support and uplift one another.

Still, Wilson stood her ground amid the backlash, insisting on Twitter there were some "grey areas and technicalities" around what constitutes a rom-com, and proceeded to block critics on Twitter who said otherwise. She later defended her previous remark, which did not go unnoticed by Mo'Nique. "So there's a slight grey area".

After responding directly to Mo'Nique, Wilson posted a lengthy statement on Monday, apologizing for not appreciating the work these women had done and the opportunities they had given her.

Which led to Mo'Nique urging Rebel to "know the history".

Fans were not convinced by the rationale, pointing out that the 2006 Paramount Studios romantic comedy The Last Holiday, starring plus size actress, Queen Latifah, did meet the perimeters Rebel herself had set. I wish you the best, ' the 50-year-old wrote.

She did, however, respond to Mo'Nique when the Oscar-winning actress joined the conversation to remind her not to erase black women.

"Isn't It Romantic" opens in theaters on February 14.
