Personal belongings Hawking left the auction

Stephen Hawking's Wheelchair And Doctoral Thesis Sell In Multimillion Dollar Auction

Personal items belonging to the late famed theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars this week after the Christie's auction house made available several pieces, including a red motorized wheelchair.

Stephen Hawking's red motorized wheelchair fetched almost 300,000 pounds (€345,500, $392,000) at auction while a dissertation sold for almost twice that amount, Christie's auction house said Thursday.

Medals and awards sold for £296,750 (NZ$571,426), compared with an estimate of £15,000 (NZ$18,884), while the red motorised wheelchair sold for £296,750 (NZ$571,530), also compared with an estimate of £15,000. The sale raised money for two charities, including one belonging to the British physicist.

According to the Associated Press, Hawking's 1965 Cambridge University thesis, "Properties of Expanding Universes", sold for 584,750 pounds (nearly $767,000 in U.S currency), over three times the pre-sale estimate.

Hawking instead lived for many more decades, dying this past March at age 76. He expanded scientific thinking about black holes and the origins of the universe and attained celebrity status, writing best-selling books and guest starring on "The Simpsons".

A copy of his bestselling "A Brief History of Time", signed with a thumbprint, sold for over $89,000.

Hawking's motorized wheelchair and a set of his medals and awards have been sold for a combined total of nearly £600,000, while a copy of his Ph.D. thesis raised almost the same amount on its own.

Children and colleague of Stephen Hawking told about the views of the scientist about the afterlife.

The items are only a small selection from Hawking's archive, which his family is donating to the nation in lieu of paying inheritance tax, although there are no details yet of where it will be stored.
