Passengers Aboard Indonesian Plane 'Revolt' Against Two Tons of Stinky Durian

Durian known as the world's worst-smelling fruit

A cargo of pungent durian fruit caused an Indonesian plane to be delayed for an hour after passengers turned their noses up at the funky freight and refused to fly.

"When I entered the plane, I could already smell the scent of durian".

Passengers demanded that the fruit be removed, with some nearly coming to blows with crew members.

That plane had been found carrying 2.7 tonnes of durian but the National Transportation committee classified the accident as a wrong take-off and loss of control, in its final report to the Aviation Safety Network. "I complained to the stewardess but they told me to just fill up a complaint form", passenger Amir Zidane wrote on Facebook, the BBC reported.

Crew members assured him the smell would vanish as soon as the plane was in the air.

Zidane refused to be placated, however.

He said he had "a little bit of an argument with the officer" but that some friends even "clashed" with crew.

Eventually, they were all asked to leave the plane while the crew unloaded the durian.

The flight left around 11:40 a.m., an hour later than scheduled, the Post reported.

The company went on to say that it was normal practice for Indonesian airlines to carry durian in the hold, "as long as [the durian] is packed well and enclosed in the cargo according to standard operating procedure".

Despite its decision to offload the fruit from the cargo, Sriwijaya Air senior corporate communications manager Retri Maya later released a statement justifying their decision by saying it was "not illegal" to carry durian fruit.

A Sriwijaya Air spokesperson confirmed the incident to the Express.co.uk and said there were three tonnes of the fruit on board the plane.

Singapore has banned the fruit in its subway and many hotels bar durians because of the notorious smell - which some critics have likened to rotten food or dirty socks.

The airport in Bengkulu, meanwhile, is said to be rethinking how durian will be transported on future flights. People either love it or hate it.
