On the line: Trump, Democrats battle in campaign's final day

In midterm elections two years after he won the White House, Trump and his fellow Republicans were set to maintain their majority in the U.S. Senate, CNN, NBC and ABC News said, following a divisive campaign marked by fierce clashes over race, immigration and other cultural issues.

Before any other network had hinted that Democrats had cross the threshold for taking control of the House, Fox News host Bret Baier broke the news that the network's "Decision Desk" had made the call.

They are vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen.

The incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly is under pressure from his Republican challenger Mike Braun.

Democrats are bringing in their own heavy hitter while campaigning to boost Obamacare and bring President Trump's legislative accomplishments to a standstill.

The GOP holds the House 75-45.

Voters cast their ballots in the midterm elections on November 6, 2018, in Appleton, Wisconsin. But Pelosi brushed off such comparisons Tuesday, arguing that Clinton won the popular vote, and was handicapped by the Electoral College, which won't be a factor in House races. About three-quarters of the registered voters named health care as in important issue to their vote, according to recent Pew research. Cynthia Nixon challenged Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo for NY governor.

Democrats also have a chance to break the GOP super majority in the Senate, as well, but results remain incomplete with a number of close races.

Phillips noted that, while this is frequently the case, the focus seems to be more on rhetoric this time than on policy. Liberal House member Beto O'Rourke became a national sensation with his underdog US Senate campaign but fell short in conservative Texas, and Andrew Gillum was trailing Republican Ron DeSantis in his quest to become the first African-American governor of the key swing state of Florida.

It also will test Trump's ability to compromise, something he has shown little interest in over the last two years with Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress.

He and the first lady were to host an evening watch party for family and friends.

Results were to continue trickling in through the night, with the last polls closing in Alaska at 0600 GMT Wednesday.

"The midterm elections used to be, like, boring", Trump told a crowd Monday in Cleveland, Ohio. That could help Democrats because younger voters tend to lean their way.

The committee also distanced itself from eight-term Rep. Steve King of Iowa after racial remarks, and his seat was unexpectedly contested in the final week of the campaign. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

But Democrats are hoping to take control of at least the House of Representatives, giving them the opportunity to derail Trump's legislative agenda, and give them power to expand investigations into his personal and professional conduct.

Democrats will likely lose a couple of House seats they've held, though: State Rep. Bobbie Richardson has lost her race in Nash County and state Rep. George Graham trails his Republican opponent in Lenoir County with most of the vote in.

"We need to go out and get our women engaged", said Sarah Chamberlain, president and CEO of Republican Main Street Partnership. "Do not let their scare tactics frighten you away from the polls".

What's happening in Senate races?

New figures on the eve of the polls confirmed that job growth is soaring and Trump gives himself credit for the "hottest economy on Earth".

Executive Director for the Center for Responsive Politics Sheila Krumholz commented: "The significance of this election is clear".

"You're going out there, you're going to make sure that people vote to start making things better", Obama said. He said since Trump has been president, he 's hired two more employees for his six-person company.

"I Voted" stickers rest on the top of a ballot box inside a polling location in Modesto, California. "Now we just need to heal the country so they can all work together".
