Now for the Wallabies: 'Seduced' England overcome Japan

Joe Cokanasiga scored a debut try as England overcame an almighty scare to fight back and beat Japan 35-15 at Twickenham.

It was the teams' first meeting since the Rugby World Cup in 1987, and a win for England coach Eddie Jones over the country he led at the 2015 competition.

The arrival of Farrell as a halftime substitute - and England's other so-called "finishers" during the second half as Jones emptied his bench - helped to change the flow of the game and the hosts scored all of their 25 second-half points from the 56th minute.

However, England came on strong in the final quarter as flanker Wilson, powerful winger Cokanasiga and hooker Dylan Hartley all crashed over secure victory and set them up nicely for a final game before the 2019 Six Nations against Australia next weekend.

"We were tested and probably got seduced by the game in the first couple of minutes, scoring an easy try, and the players subconsciously think it is going to be easy and we knocked off a bit in a our effort and attitude which is disappointing".

England fly-half George Ford: "We were very disappointed with the first half".

Danny Care's early try had put England in front but they lacked cohesion in a poor first-half display before raising their game following the introduction of Owen Farrell at the interval. "We played like England in the second half, I can only recall Japan getting in our 22 once in that second period".

They showed their intent by turning down a series of kickable penalties and got their reward when centre Nakamura swept through opposite number Alex Lozowski, who had a day to forget and was replaced at the break, to score under the posts.

Tamura converted and Japan led 10-7 before England won a scrum penalty on the halfway line that saw long-range kick specialist Daly's superb 50-metre strike level the scores. They looked quicker, sharper and more ambitious, with through-the-legs and round-the-back passes bringing gasps from the otherwise silent Twickenham crowd, who were left wondering what had happened to the team beaten by a single point by New Zealand only a week ago.

The score was levelled through Daly's penalty taken on the halfway line but Japan was soon back in front through a try from captain Michael Leitch that was a combination of magnificent running and awful defense by Care, replacement Hartley, and Harry Williams.

In the first half Japan had 77 percent of territory and 69 percent of possession.

"It was a big experience for us and it's exactly what we need as we get into the World Cup next year", the former New Zealand worldwide added.

Jamie Joseph, the current Japan coach, said the match had been a valuable learning experience for his side ahead of the World Cup. "We played some really positive rugby and, most of the time, matched the physicality", he said.

Jones called on his much-changed side to "smash" his former team and advised the Brave Blossoms to "go to the temple and pray".
