Not enough toilets! says Bill Gates as he supports China's toilet revolution

Bill Gates unveils lavatory of the future and says he loves 'few things more than toilets'

The billionaire philanthropist's stunt marked the opening of the three-day Reinvented Toilet Expo in China, a showcase event for hi-tech lavatory products, The Sunday Times reports.

"Today, rich countries have a sewage system where you bring water in, put the human waste in it and it goes out to all the way to a treatment processing plant", Gates told CNN.

"Technology that you see here, are the most significant achievements in the field of sanitation in nearly 200 years", gates said at the opening of the Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing.

"So when I talk about components of this toilet being made in China, others in Thailand, others in the United States - you really want to be bringing together all of that IQ so that you're getting that combination".

The ideas are being hailed by Gates as the "most significant advances in sanitation in almost 200 years", the news site reports.

According to the foundation half a million children (under the age of five years) die due to poor sanitation annually.

The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the African Development Bank also announced at the expo commitments with the potential to unlock 2.5 billion USA dollars in financing for sanitation projects that provide people in all parts of a city, including the poorest neighborhoods, with safely managed sanitation services.

"Getting rid of that waste is key to human health", he said, adding that in the West "it all gets cleared up and we take that for granted".

"As we have these newer cities with lots of less wealthy people in them, those sewers have not been built and in fact, it's not likely they ever will be, so the question is, could you do it?" The results of human activity will be processed in it yourself.

"China has an opportunity to launch a new category of innovated non-sewered sanitation solutions that will benefit millions of people worldwide".

The foundation has said they hope the reinvented toilet will first roll out in buildings like schools and apartment buildings, before costs gradually decline and they become affordable in households.

Gates' trip comes amid trade tension between China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, which have slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on goods worth billions of dollars.

Mr Gates said it would be a mistake for the USA to cut aid.
