And at their X018 event Saturday, they company revealed their intent to bring two studios into their fold: Obsidian Entertainment and inXile, bringing their total studio count to 13. The second is Obsidian Entertainment, recently renowned for Fallout New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and the Pillars of Eternity series.

Founded in 2002 by Interplay founder Brian Fargo, inXile has studios in Newport Beach, Calif. and New Orleans.

Microsoft Studios head Matt Booty noted to us in a statement that inXile will retain autonomy to create whatever it chooses, and that the studio will continue to deliver great RPG experiences in the future. What this means for gamers remains to be seen, Microsoft's publishing arm has a reputation for enabling studios without squashing creativity - Bungie did quite well there, for awhile - but both inXile and Obsidian have a reputation for caring more about fans than bottom-lines. "Obsidian and inXile embody all of these qualities while also bringing expertise on the PC platform and a unique RPG focus to the table". He said the team intends to carry on making role-playing games. The studio quickly made a name for itself with the Xbox exclusive Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.

Obsidian and inXile are not the first studios to have been acquired by Microsoft Studios this year. The developer of Pillars of Eternity and many other titles had been rumored to be acquired recently. Out of all of the acquisitions Microsoft has announced in 2018, Obsidian is probably the most consistent of them all and could legitimately help them in both the Xbox One and PC realms.
