New Jersey couple tragically killed on the way to their own wedding

Kathryn Schurtz and her fiancé Joseph Kearny were killed on Wednesday in a crash on Interstate 78. They were driving to their wedding in Pittsburgh

Schurtz, 35, of New Jersey and her fiance Joseph D. Kearney died in the crash that happened about 2:28 p.m. Wednesday when a tractor-trailer hit a passenger vehicle, starting a fiery six-vehicle crash, police said.

The Council Borough of Fanwood, New Jersey, where Schurtz's mother Karen worked as a councilwoman also paid tribute on Facebook.

In her obituary, Schurtz is remembered for her "voracious appetite for reading, love of cooking, and trailblazing new adventures with Joseph".

Kearney was from Pittsburgh, where their wedding was set to take place last week.

The accident left the couple dead and three others injured after the driver of a tractor-trailer couldn't slow the vehicle down for traffic.

News 12 New Jersey reported that the crash happened Wednesday on Interstate 78 in Berks County when a tractor-trailer hit the back of their auto, causing a chain reaction with four other vehicles.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the accident caused a fire that burned two of the tractor-trailers and the couple's vehicle. His aunt posted on Facebook on Sunday that the family's "lives changed tragically" when they heard the news.

Kathyrn Schurtz, 35, and Joseph Kearney, also 35, were killed in the accident.

Gatherings at Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church in Scotch Plains were scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Further information for Kearney wasn't immediately available.
