New Gallup Poll Finds High Anxiety Among Democrats on Election Day

The Democrats appeared close to taking back the House on Tuesday in a victory that could slap a check on President Donald Trump's agenda over the next two years and lead to a multitude of investigations into his business dealings and his administration.

Early voting results showed some positive signs for Democrats in North Carolina and across the country after polls closed Tuesday in the 2018 midterm election.

The most expensive and consequential midterm elections in modern times came to a dramatic finish that underscored the nation's deep polarisation, but fell short of delivering a sweeping repudiation of Trump that Democrats had hoped would put an exclamation point on the "resistance" movement.

Former vice president Joe Biden, often touted as a possible Democratic candidate to take on Trump in 2020, said he'd be "dumbfounded" not to win the House.

A Republican victory in both chambers of Congress would be a validation for Mr Trump's polarising style, a month after he solidified a conservative majority on the Supreme Court when the Senate confirmed his nominee Brett Kavanaugh after a fight over sexual misconduct accusations against the jurist. Current Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, started this trend with a policy of "obstructionism" - using the powers of the Senate to stand in the way of many of President Barack Obama's proposals.

They were part of a wave of female candidates on the Democratic side, including Jennifer Wexton, who easily unseated Rep. Barbara Comstock (R) in a closely watched race in Northern Virginia, and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who narrowly defeated Repeblican Carlos Curbelo (R) in South Florida. From 6 p.m.to 7 p.m., insiders will have their eyes on Lexington, where Republican incumbent Andy Barr is up against Democratic challenger Amy McGrath, a retired Marine. She finished about 3 percentage points behind the incumbent in a Lexington-area district Trump won by 15 percentage points in 2016.

In Virginia's 7th District, a Republican-leaning area near Richmond, Republican Rep. Dave Brat was in a tight race with Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer. Cruz is expected to keep his seat in the Senate, but a win for O'Rourke would send a real signal to Republicans that their "safe" seats aren't as safe as they think.

Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez won a third Senate term in New Jersey, despite a federal bribery indictment that prosecutors dropped this year after a mistrial.

The midterm elections are viewed as a referendum on how well the president is doing in office, with the vote determining which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Voter turnout, normally lower when the White House is not at stake, could be the highest for a midterm election in 50 years, experts predicted.

Democrats are defending 10 Senate seats in states that Trump won in 2016.

The party needed a net gain of 23 seats to break the Republicans' eight-year hold on the House that began with the tea party revolt of 2010. Almost 4 in 10 said they were casting ballots to express opposition to him, while just 1 in 4 said their vote was an expression of support. Also, more said they showed up at the polls to express opposition than did those who said they were casting a ballot to support him.

What happens on election day?

There are, however, also many points of probable conflict between Trump and the next House: Democrats are likely to launch investigations into numerous aspects of the Trump administration, from its ties to Russian Federation to the president's tax returns, as well as to step up oversight into Trump's executive actions on immigration, the environment and other regulations.

AP reports that Democrats have won half of the seats they need to claim House majority; GOP picking up key Senate contests. According to Gallup, 66% of Republicans or "Republican leaners" are "very or somewhat worried" about what would happen with a Democratic majority in the House or Senate-while 34% are "not too or not at all anxious". Among those expected: Vice President Mike Pence and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal adviser to the president.

"We're going to win, based on data", Pelosi of California said at the Democratic campaign headquarters in Washington. If Republicans hold their ground, stocks could gain further, with hopes of more tax cuts ahead. In both Senate and House races, Democrats have focused heavily on health care and protecting people with pre-existing medical conditions. The survey is separate from the traditional exit polls for the television networks.

"We'll just have to work a little bit differently", he told reporters. Control of the U.S. House will depend on the effectiveness of the spillover from the President's message to suburban women voters in districts where he did not campaign.

The Senate consists of 100 members, two from each state.
