Netflix's 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Spurs $150M Lawsuit

Netflix

The Satanic Temple has filed a hefty $50-million lawsuit claiming its iconic Baphomet statue was hijacked to create a stereotypical representation of the supernatural evil in Netflix show 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'.

The Temple is also seeking an injunction to prevent the series being redistributed with the image of the statue.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday in the U.S. District court of NY, the Satanic Temple is suing Netflix and Warner Brothers for damages, alleging the media giants ripped off an image of their statue and portrayed it as evil, when it's meant to be a symbol of good.

While the Satanic Temple might sound like your average run-of-the-mill satanists, the group is actually known for its political activism and use of satire against what it says is Christian privilege in the USA government.

The suit claims that the "Defendants misappropriated the TST Baphomet Children in ways implying that the monument stands for evil".

The Satanic Temple made national headlines in 2014 after campaigning to have the Baphomet statue placed alongside a monument of the Ten Commandments in Oklahoma City on the grounds of religious freedom.

In the series Sabrina Spellman attends The Academy of Unseen Arts where there is a statue of Baphomet.

Characters in the show who worship the "Dark Lord" or Satan practice cannibalism and forced worship, and the Satanic Temple argues its members are being associated with these "evil antagonists", the BBC report said.

Neither Warner Bros or Netflix has commented on the case.

It is based of the same comic book series which spawned Sabrina The Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart and running from 1996-2003. The group's founder, Lucien Greaves compared the two works on Twitter.

According to its website, the Satanic Temple aims to "encourage benevolence and empathy among all people".
