MLB Rumors: This Team Had Midseason Trade In Place For Bryce Harper

Bryce Harper

The Houston Astros and Washington Nationals reportedly had a deal in place that would've sent the six-time All-Star to Houston in exchange for three minor league players. Bryce Harper has officially been a free agent since he World Series ended on October 27th, but things could've been so much different if the Washington Nationals had just pulled the trigger months ago on a trade.

Rosenthal reports that Nationals ownership "refused to approve the move" and vetoed the trade before it could reach the closing stages.

Imagine how things could have changed in the AL, where the Astros still won 103 games and jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Red Sox in the ALDS before dropping four straight.

It looks like the Astros had a few tricks up their sleeves this past Major League Baseball season, and one of them was trying to acquire the hottest free agent on the market right now in Bryce Harper. Catcher Garrett Stubbs, the team's No. 15 prospect, was also reportedly in play, along with another, low-level, minor-league pitcher as well, per Rosenthal. Now Washington's compensation for the longtime face of their franchise will be a compensatory pick after the fourth round of the 2019 draft. Harper, 26, rejected a 10-year, $300 million offer from the Nats on the final day of the regular season, according to the Washington Post, opting to enter the free-agent market instead.
