MI voters legalize recreational marijuana use

Midterms and marijuana: These 4 states will vote on legal pot

With 79 per cent of polls reporting, almost 61 per cent voters in the state voted against the legalization of recreational marijuana use for those 21 and older.

Measures legalizing recreational marijuana are being considered during the midterm elections by voters in MI and North Dakota, potentially adding either to the list of nine states with similar laws now in place. The latter is the only state that does not authorize marijuana stores.

North Dakotans decisively rejected a proposal to make marijuana legal for recreational purposes.

MI already had a sizable medical marijuana industry, but Tuesday's vote means residents 21 and older can now consume the drug and grow up to 12 plants for personal use.

MI voters approved Proposal 1, allowing adults 21 and older to buy, grow, use and possess marijuana for recreational purposes.

MI voters have passed an initiative to legalize marijuana.

Proposals legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes are pending in Missouri and Utah, meanwhile, where their passage would increase the number of states that permit medical cannabis from 31.

Impose a 10-ounce limit for marijuana kept at residences and require amounts over 2.5 ounces be secured in locked containers. Residents of Missouri will decide between three competing measures to legalize medicinal pot. During any 14-day period, a state-licensed cardholder could purchase as much as 2 ounces of marijuana.

Missouri voters opted to approve the sale of medical marijuana with a 4 per cent tax on cannabis sales with the revenue dedicated to health care services for USA veterans. The most significant changes in the compromise bill include: Some qualifying conditions would be removed while others would be added, local jurisdictions would have more power to ban dispensaries in their regions, dispensaries would be forced to have a licensed pharmacist on staff and the shops would be renamed to pharmacies, and edibles would be banned along with smoking, but other ways to consume cannabis would still be allowed. If more than one measure passes, the proposal with the largest affirmative vote will become law.
