May suffers new blow as minister resigns over Brexit

Jo Johnson resigns as minister over Brexit | London

His comments come the day after Jo Johnson, the pro-European brother of the former foreign secretary and arch-Brexiteer Boris, quit as transport minister saying he couldn't vote for the deal May was negotiating, and called for a second referendum on Brexit.

Corbyn said any Brexit deal brought to the Commons by the government would need to be measured against Labour's six tests for a withdrawal agreement.

The Tory MP, who headed Parliament's fight to give MPs the final say on Theresa May's Brexit deal at the end of the negotiations, claimed Parliament could impose a proposal to extend Article 50 at the end of the negotiations in case MPs voted down the deal reached by the Prime Minister with Brussels.

This is despite the fact he reportedly wrote the 2015 election manifesto for the Tory party promising to "honour the result of the [2016] referendum, whatever the outcome".

He added: 'This is one of the most momentous questions we will ever face in our political careers.

"The issue now has to be how we bring people together, bring people together around the principles of our economy, our rights, and that we don't turn this country into some kind of offshore tax haven on the lines that Donald Trump might want us to".

Johnson is the 14th minister to have resigned from government since November a year ago.

For some time, Jo Johnson has struggled with the unfolding reality of Brexit.

Ms May had hoped to convince her cabinet this weekend to back the deal but there appears to be dissension over the terms of the customs union with the EU that is necessary to avoid a trade barrier at the Northern Ireland border with Ireland to the south.

Even a no-deal Brexit "may well be better than the never-ending purgatory" that Mrs May's plan would offer, he said. Meanwhile, a spokesman for May's office says there will not be a second referendum on Brexit under any circumstances.

But he said a second referendum is "not the way forward and is not supported by the public".

Downing Street thanked him for his work but ruled out another referendum.

"All the evidence is that the country is still, more or less, split down the middle".

An EU diplomat told Reuters earlier on Saturday that they were cautiously hopeful that an EU summit could happen in November to endorse the deal but that the volatile situation in Britain made it very hard to predict.

Prominent Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg also criticised attempts to force a new poll on European Union membership.
