May faces renewed Brexit pressure after surprise ministerial resignation

Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab is trying to negotiate a deal

Mrs May is under fire from both wings of the Tory party after the shock resignation from the Government of Mr Johnson's pro-European brother Jo, who also delivered a withering attack on the PM's stance.

He added: "In the sense that if you betray the British people where they no longer believe in democracy... you don't know what the consequences are".

Mr Johnson's dramatic move to exit Government, four months after his brother Boris dealt Mrs May a political blow by walking out of Cabinet, took Westminster by surprise.

"Given that the reality of Brexit has turned out to be so far from what was once promised, the democratic thing to do is to give the public the final say", he added.

His brother Boris, who quit as foreign secretary in July, praised his decision, saying the brothers were "united in dismay" at the Prime Minister's handling of the negotiations.

"Contrary to promises, there is in fact no deal at all on our future trading relationship with the European Union which the government can present to the country", he wrote.

"The prospect of Kent becoming the Lorry Park of England is very real in a no deal scenario".

Mr Johnson's resignation came just hours after Mrs May's de facto deputy said he hoped a deal would result in a "new dynamic" at Westminster, with MPs rallying behind the Prime Minister.

The EU rejected Mrs May's plan for a mechanism which would allow the United Kingdom to leave such an arrangement.

"It can not be what you wanted nor did the 2016 referendum provide any mandate for it".

Jo Johnson, a Conservative MP for the constituency of Orpington, has said: "My view is that this is so different from what was billed that it would be an absolute travesty if we don't go back to the people and ask if they want to exit the European Union on this extraordinarily hopeless basis".

He wrote: "Boundless admiration as ever for my brother Jo". It is a surrender of control.

She has consistently rejected the idea of another nationwide vote on Brexit, insisting her obligation is to make good on the will of the people as expressed in 2016.

Johnson said Brussels offered Britain a chose between "vassalage and chaos" and that the document was "a failure of British statecraft on a scale unseen since the Suez crisis".

"There's a widening gap between those politicians who believe the government's bad Brexit deal is what this country should accept, and those who believe we can do so much better at the forefront of the European Union and the world". Meanwhile, a spokesman for May's office says there will not be a second referendum on Brexit under any circumstances.

Jenny Chapman, Shadow Brexit Minister, said: "Jo Johnson is the eighteenth minister to resign from Theresa May's government".
