Managers detained after China firm forced staff to drink urine

In some cases employees reportedly had their heads shaved or were forced to drink toilet water

Police arrested the managers after videos of them whipping employees with a belt and forcing them to drink yellow liquid emerged on social media. The hashtag "employees who failed to meet their goals forced to drink urine" has since been viewed nearly 540,000 times.

The video showed a shirtless man surrounded by a group of people and being flogged with a belt by a woman.

Other staff, said to be employees of the home renovation company in the city of Guizhou, can be seen drinking yellow liquid from plastic cups while holding their noses.

In a statement released by police, it was revealed that two of the firm's managers have been jailed for ten days, while another will serve five days in jail.

Moreover, managers of the firm were discovered threatening staff via text messages.

"If the sales goal has not been met by the end of this month, the team leader will have to eat three cockroaches for each failed sale", one message, via the report, read.

According to the report, staff were subjected to a range of freakish punishments, including being forced to eat mustard, eat insects, drink water that had socks in it and having their head shaved.

Netizens have questioned why the staff did not resign after being subjected to such maltreatment, but one employee shared via Pear Video that they were owed two months' pay by the firm. The company also allegedly threatened to severely reduce severance pay for anyone who quit. Apple, Amazon and Samsung supplier HEG Technology have all been accused of child labour, forced overtime and low wages in the past, according to New York-based China Labour Watch.

Police in Zunyi county police arrested three managers and they were later sentenced to jail time.
